The recent military drill saw Chinese J-16 jets participating in combat training alongside French-manufactured Rafale fighters for the first time. This exercise, characterised by its rarity, provides an opportunity for Chinese pilots to evaluate their capabilities against a Western aircraft model. India is paying close attention to these developments, particularly as both Indian Rafales and Pakistani-operated Chinese J-10 jets were involved in aerial hostilities last year.

The exercise, titled “Eagles of Civilisation,” initiated a valuable opportunity to assess the performance of the J-16 in a simulated combat environment. The J-16, often referred to as the ‘Hidden Dragon,’ boasts advanced features compared to the J-10, making its capabilities highly relevant as China’s air force continues to expand in the region. Additionally, Pakistan’s intent to acquire the J-16 raises strategic concerns for India.

At present, Pakistan operates the Chinese J-10C, an export model of the J-10, alongside the JF-17 Thunder. The growing interest in J-16 acquisition by Pakistan further underscores the necessity for India to monitor the results of this exercise closely. Meanwhile, India is also progressing with plans to procure an additional 114 Rafale jets from France in response to the evolving regional dynamics.

Details of the Combat Drill

Commencing on August 22, the second iteration of the drills involved Chinese J-16s executing one-on-one air combat scenarios with Rafales. This simulated environment was designed to reflect realistic combat situations. Participating in these exercises, Egypt’s MiG-29 fighters demonstrated the comprehensive nature of the drill.

Footage released by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) showed a Rafale jet engaging in manoeuvres closely with a J-16, marking the first time a Chinese fighter has participated in aerial drills against the Rafale. Both aircraft are categorised as fourth and a half generation fighters, featuring state-of-the-art avionics, advanced radar capabilities, and sophisticated electronic warfare systems.

The J-16, developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), is recognised for its versatility and advanced combat capabilities, possessing a greater firepower capacity than the J-10 series. The twin-engine, two-seater design of the J-16 allows for extended range missions, further enhancing its effectiveness.

Implications for India

The implications of the China-Egypt military exercise extend beyond routine drills for India, particularly in light of last year’s Operation Sindoor, which involved both Indian Rafales and Pakistani J-10s in military confrontations. The dynamics of the current exercise are of significant interest to the Indian Air Force (IAF), especially concerning the performance of the J-16 jet amidst growing military cooperation between China and Pakistan.

China’s admission of providing technical support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor adds another layer of complexity to this scenario. Reports suggest that China offered real-time intelligence, although Pakistan faced considerable losses, including damage to various military aircraft and installations.

Furthermore, recent events from Operation Sindoor have underscored the critical role of air superiority in resolving conflicts, making the outcome of the J-16’s performance against the Rafale particularly consequential for India. The insights gained from these aerial exercises in Egypt could yield valuable lessons regarding the capabilities and limitations of a jet that Pakistan might integrate into its military arsenal, thereby affecting the strategic balance in the region.
