The Pegase 26 air mission has been highlighted by the French Embassy in India as a significant demonstration of the nation’s long-range air capabilities. It underscores France’s commitment to bolstering cooperation with its strategic allies, particularly India, in the Indo-Pacific region. This mission involves four Rafale fighter jets and is set to last approximately 40 days, covering a vast distance of about 40,000 kilometres.

Operating from September 8 to October 15, the mission includes four Rafale jets supported by three A330 MRTT aerial refuelling aircraft, two A400M transport aircraft, and a contingent of around 300 personnel. This complex deployment reflects France’s strategic interests across multiple continents and regions.

The mission aims to connect the Arctic, Indo-Pacific, and Middle East, marking an ambitious route intended for operational testing and enhancing collaborative capabilities with partner nations. It began with a flight towards Greenland before progressing through Canada, Alaska, and extending towards Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia, as well as making stops in Qatar, La Réunion, and Egypt.

Operational Context and Routes

The French Ministry of Armed Forces has noted that this deployment is particularly significant, as it is the first Pegase mission to take a northern trajectory over Greenland towards Alaska. During the journey, the Rafale jets completed five aerial refuelling operations to sustain their long-range capabilities, which highlights their operational flexibility.

General Julien Sabéné, who leads the Pegase 26 operation, stated the importance of exploring alternative flight paths for potential Indo-Pacific operations. This approach allows for evaluations of France’s adaptability to different environments while enhancing interoperability with allied forces.

The French Defence Ministry aims to reinforce links with countries that are geographically distant from France, emphasising the relevance of the mission in strengthening partnerships with nations in the Indo-Pacific area.

India’s Role in the Mission

India features prominently in the Indo-Pacific facet of Pegase 26, where French aircraft are scheduled to be involved in Exercise Tarang Shakti. This exercise will facilitate further development of interoperability between the French and Indian air forces, reflecting the growing strategic collaboration between the two nations.

The recent elevation of Indo-French relations to a “Special Global Strategic Partnership” in February 2026 serves as a backdrop for this initiative. Both countries have expressed their commitment to fostering a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, while also intensifying efforts in defence research, development, and production.

In addition to India, Pegase 26 also serves to strengthen partnerships with Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia, showcasing France’s capability to mobilise its air force over extensive distances and operate effectively alongside its partners.

Significance of Collaborative Efforts

French officials have characterised the Pegase 26 operation as more than just a military exercise; it is seen as a vital opportunity for fostering cooperation and interoperability among allies. According to French Deputy Defence Minister Alice Rufo, the successful execution of such missions depends on the ability of the involved forces to work seamlessly together.

Rufo indicated that interoperability is not an automatic process; it is cultivated through joint exercises and operations. This mission also reflects France’s dedication to upholding international law and ensuring freedom of movement in global waterways.

Importantly, Pegase 26 is not a nuclear deployment. The Rafale aircraft currently engaged in the mission are equipped with mock conventional weapons for training purposes, and personnel from France’s Strategic Air Force are actively involved in supporting these operations.
