IPL 2026 LSG vs DC: Delhi Capitals Beat Lucknow Super Giants By 6 Wickets

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Capitals defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 6 wickets in Match 5 of IPL 2026 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, chasing down 142 to finish at 145/4 in 17.1 overs. The win marked a composed start for Delhi after a strong bowling display.

DC Bowlers Restrict LSG To 141

After opting to bowl, Delhi Capitals produced a collective effort to dismiss Lucknow Super Giants for 141 in 18.4 overs. Mitchell Marsh top-scored with 35 off 28 balls, while Abdul Samad added 36 off 25 to provide some resistance.

Rishabh Pant managed 7 off 9 before being run out, and Nicholas Pooran scored 8 off 8 as LSG failed to build sustained momentum. Shahbaz Ahmed remained unbeaten on 15 off 16, but wickets at regular intervals stalled the innings.

Delhi’s bowling unit shared the wickets effectively. T Natarajan (3/29) and Lungi Ngidi (3/27) led the attack, while Kuldeep Yadav (2/31) and Axar Patel (1/17) controlled the middle overs. LSG were bowled out with eight balls remaining, finishing with a run rate of 7.55.

Opening Concerns Continue For Delhi Capitals

Despite the comfortable win, Delhi Capitals’ long-standing issue with their opening combination resurfaced. KL Rahul was dismissed for a duck off the first ball, while Pathum Nissanka managed just 1 off 5, leaving DC at 25/3 early in the chase.

The struggles at the top are not new. Delhi Capitals experimented with multiple opening combinations in IPL 2025, using at least three different pairs during the season, including Faf du Plessis–Jake Fraser-McGurk, Fraser-McGurk–KL Rahul, and Abishek Porel–Fraser-McGurk.

Overall, they used as many as six opening combinations across the season, underlining the lack of stability at the top.

Even their best pairing averaged just over 30, while the team’s overall opening partnerships averaged close to 20, among the lowest in the league.

That inconsistency was evident again, with DC reduced to 26/4 inside 4.3 overs after Nitish Rana (15) and Axar Patel (0) also fell early.

Rizvi, Stubbs Rescue DC With Match-Winning Stand

Delhi Capitals recovered through a decisive unbeaten partnership between Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs. Rizvi anchored the innings with 70 not out off 47 balls, hitting 5 fours and 4 sixes, while Stubbs supported him with 39 not out off 32 balls.

The pair stitched a 119-run stand, stabilising the innings after the early collapse and ensuring there were no further setbacks. Their measured approach combined with timely boundaries allowed DC to regain control of the chase.

Lucknow Super Giants’ bowlers made early inroads, with Mohammed Shami, Prince Yadav and Mohsin Khan picking up wickets, but they failed to apply pressure once the partnership settled.

Delhi Capitals completed the chase in 17.1 overs with 17 balls to spare. Rizvi was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 70, which proved decisive after the top-order collapse.

The win gives Delhi Capitals 2 points to begin their IPL 2026 campaign, though questions around their opening combination persist. Lucknow Super Giants, meanwhile, will look to address their middle-order inconsistency ahead of their next fixture.
