IPL 2026: Delhi Capitals Opt to Bowl First Against Lucknow Super Giants

The CSR Journal Magazine

The opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season kicked off at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium, where the Delhi Capitals (DC) emerged victorious in the toss, opting to bowl first against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The match took place on April 1. DC’s captain, Axar Patel, emphasized his decision to bowl first was driven by the desire to assess the pitch’s characteristics, particularly its pace support.

Captain Axar Patel’s Insights

After the toss, Axar Patel stated that his team preferred to chase down the target, as historical data suggests that teams batting second have a better chance of winning. He mentioned, “We want to see if the wicket offers assistance to the pacers. Last year, we started well but lost momentum mid-season, and we aim to establish a strong start once again.” In discussing his overseas selections, Patel included batters David Miller, Pathum Nissanka, and Tristan Stubbs, alongside bowler Lungi Ngidi.

Rishabh Pant’s Response for LSG

Conversely, LSG’s captain, Rishabh Pant, downplayed the significance of the toss, indicating that the pitch conditions would remain consistent regardless of who batted first. He noted that the team is optimistic, having overcome injury setbacks from the previous season. Pant confirmed the inclusion of international players Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, and Anrich Nortje in the lineup, stating that his team is energetic and prepared to compete.

Team Performance Expectations

Looking to begin their campaign effectively, LSG aims to improve from their seventh-place finish last season. Meanwhile, DC is determined to perform better than the previous year, when they fell short of playoff qualification despite winning five of their first seven matches. A strong start in this opening game is crucial for both teams to set a positive trajectory for the tournament.

Playing XI for Both Teams

For the Lucknow Super Giants, the playing eleven includes Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper/captain), Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad, Mukul Choudhary, Mohsin Khan, Mohammed Shami, Anrich Nortje, and Prince Yadav. The impact substitutes are Digvesh Rathi, Avesh Khan, Himmat Singh, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Akshat Raghuvanshi.

On the other hand, the Delhi Capitals lineup features KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Pathum Nissanka, Nitish Rana, Axar Patel (captain), Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Vipraj Nigam, Lungi Ngidi, Kuldeep Yadav, T Natarajan, and Mukesh Kumar. Their impact substitutes include Ashutosh Sharma, Auqib Nabi, Sameer Rizvi, Dushmantha Chameera, and Karun Nair.
