Indian Surgeon Sets World Record with 20,000-Km Remote Robotic Heart Surgery

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a landmark achievement for global healthcare and medical technology, an Indian surgeon has successfully performed a robot-assisted cardiac surgery on a patient in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, while operating remotely from Guyana, nearly 20,000 kilometers away. The feat has set a new world record for the longest-distance robotic cardiac telesurgery ever conducted.

The groundbreaking procedure linked the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in Guyana with IRCAD India in Indore. Renowned robotic cardiac surgeon Dr. Sudhir Srivastava carried out a Left Internal Mammary Artery (LIMA) takedown using the SSI Mantra Surgical Robotic System, an advanced robotic platform developed in India.

Breaking Previous Distance Records

The latest operation has surpassed the previous record for robotic cardiac telesurgery, which was conducted between Strasbourg in France and Indore, covering a distance of approximately 10,000 kilometers. By doubling that distance, the new procedure demonstrates the growing capabilities of remote surgical technology and its potential to transform healthcare access worldwide.

Experts believe the achievement could pave the way for highly specialized surgeries to be performed across continents, bringing advanced medical care to regions with limited access to expert surgeons.

Precision Surgery Across Continents

Dr. Srivastava operated through a tele-surgeon console, a compact robotic control station that enables surgeons to perform procedures remotely in real time. While the surgeon was located in Guyana, the robotic arms and surgical instruments remained in Indore, accurately replicating every movement made at the control console.

The surgery was conducted over a high-speed fiber-optic network with a latency of just 290 to 300 milliseconds. This minimal delay ensured seamless communication and precise surgical execution, supported by high-definition 3D imaging and advanced robotic controls.

Collaboration and Innovation

The procedure was supported by leading Indian medical experts, including Dr. Lalit Malik, Dr. Ram Shukla, and Dr. Mohit Bhandari, President of IRCAD India. Their collaboration was instrumental in ensuring the success of the complex cardiac operation.

The record-setting surgery coincided with Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the launch of the country’s National Robotic Surgery Programme. Guyana’s President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, hailed the achievement as a transformative moment for healthcare, highlighting how technology can bridge geographical barriers and expand access to world-class medical treatment.
