Indian Railways Moves 145 Million Tonnes Freight, Carries 61 Crore Passengers in May 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Railways has reported consistent growth in both freight and passenger traffic. In May 2026, the organisation loaded 145 million tonnes of freight, marking a 1.3 per cent increase compared to May 2025. This growth in freight loading occurred amid ongoing global logistics challenges, particularly those arising from geopolitical circumstances in West Asia.

Key commodities such as iron ore, steel, and fertilisers have contributed to this positive trend. The Ministry of Railways, in its assessment of the figures, noted a significant 16 per cent rise in the loading of Other Goods in May 2026. Iron ore loading increased by 4.8 per cent, and the loading of Pig Iron and Finished Steel recorded a boost of 3.5 per cent year-on-year.

Additionally, the loading of fertilisers rose by 6.2 per cent, meeting agricultural and industrial demands across multiple regions. Coal remains the primary contributor to freight traffic, showing a nearly 1 per cent increase over the previous year. Indian Railways continues to prioritise coal transportation to thermal power stations as part of efforts to address national energy needs.

The organisation has also ramped up monitoring of both domestic and EXIM container traffic to ensure efficient freight movement while minimising disruptions in the supply chain.

Passenger Traffic Surpasses 61 Crore

Passenger traffic during May 2026 showed remarkable growth, with Indian Railways carrying over 61 crore passengers, up from approximately 59 crore in the previous year. The Non-Suburban aspect of passenger travel witnessed a 7.4 per cent increase, rising from 28 crore to 30 crore passengers. These figures indicate robust demand for rail journeys, both short and long-distance.

To accommodate the seasonal increase in passenger numbers, Indian Railways has introduced a substantial number of Summer Special Trains across various routes. This strategic move aims to ease the travel experience for the increasing number of passengers during peak seasons.

The expansion of rail services reflects the organisation’s commitment to enhancing transportation facilities throughout the country, ensuring that rail travel continues to be a reliable option for millions of passengers.

Expansion of Modern Train Services Continues

Indian Railways is actively broadening its range of modern train services, with 164 Vande Bharat services currently in operation. The introduction of the Sleeper Vande Bharat service, connecting Howrah and Kamakhya, is part of this ongoing expansion. These services are designed to enhance travel comfort and convenience for passengers.

The number of Amrit Bharat services has also increased, reaching 68 after the introduction of three new services in May 2026. This development signifies Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to improve the quality and frequency of rail services available to the public.

With consistent growth in freight loading and rising passenger traffic, alongside the expansion of modern train services, Indian Railways continues to play a crucial role in facilitating transportation and stimulating economic activity across India. This progress underscores the importance of railways in connecting people and supporting various sectors of the economy.
