Indian Pilot Captain Smit Machchhar Recovering After Foiling Co-Pilot’s Crash Attempt on Flydubai Flight

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is reportedly recovering well following a serious incident involving an alleged attempt by his co-pilot to bring down a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The occurrence led to an emergency landing of the aircraft, which was carrying 174 passengers, in Tabuk, a city in northwest Saudi Arabia.

The emergency landing was executed after Captain Machchhar intervened in the cockpit, where the alleged attack took place. All passengers were transferred to safety and managed to continue their journey to Israel following the resolution of the situation.

Reports indicate that the pilot was attacked and sustained serious injuries. The timely actions taken by Machchhar reportedly averted a more disastrous outcome. He was subsequently transported to a hospital in the UAE for further medical care and recovery.

Medical Update on Captain Machchhar

The Indian Embassy in the UAE provided an update regarding Machchhar’s condition, confirming that he is “in good health and recovering well.” Indian Ambassador to the UAE, Deepak Mittal, visited the injured pilot and his family in the hospital, underscoring the embassy’s commitment to ensuring his well-being.

The embassy stated, “The Embassy remains in close coordination with local authorities to ensure his continued medical care and well-being.” Earlier, on the night of the incident, the Indian mission in Riyadh reported that the pilot was receiving necessary treatment in Tabuk and was in a stable condition.

Captain Machchhar was moved to the UAE for further treatment the day after being admitted to the hospital in Tabuk, where he had been initially treated for his injuries. This move demonstrates the embassy’s ongoing support for him and his family during this challenging time.

Details Surrounding the Attack

The alleged assailant, identified by Israeli officials as an Omani national, reportedly attacked Machchhar, inflicting stab wounds that caused the aircraft to decline rapidly by nearly 14,000 feet within a short span of thirty seconds. Eyewitness accounts suggest that Captain Machchhar displayed remarkable bravery in the face of extreme danger.

An account from the Times of Israel detailed that despite being critically injured, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, using his remaining strength. This crucial action enabled the passengers and crew to subdue the co-pilot, ultimately leading to the safe landing of the aircraft.

Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, praised Captain Machchhar’s bravery, with Netanyahu describing him as a “true hero.” The incident culminated with all passengers safely arriving at their destination, while the focus now remains on the recovery process for the injured pilot, underscoring both the gravity of the incident and Machchhar’s extraordinary response.
