Indian-Origin Miami Store Manager Charged with Stealing $300,000 in Lottery Tickets

The CSR Journal Magazine

A store manager of Indian descent in Miami has been apprehended on allegations of stealing over $300,000 worth of lottery scratch-off tickets from his place of employment. Rakesh Tanguturi, aged 34, was in charge of Bargain Stop Market II, located in Little Haiti. Authorities took him into custody on Monday, with charges including organized scheme to defraud and first-degree grand theft.

Investigation Background

The investigation commenced when the store owner alerted police on January 23 regarding unusual transactions from the shop’s bank account linked to Florida Lottery activities. The owner became suspicious about a week earlier after noticing significant withdrawals. During the investigation, the owner connected the missing funds to Tanguturi.

Admissions and Financial Impact

Initially, Tanguturi denied any involvement in the theft but later confessed via text message to taking books of scratch-off tickets, which he reportedly cashed in for personal expenses. Authorities estimate that he stole lottery tickets worth more than $300,000, although he has returned a substantial portion of the money, resulting in an overall loss to the store of approximately $60,000.

Motivation Behind the Theft

According to the arrest report, Tanguturi expressed that he had started to reimburse the store and sought a structured payment plan for the remaining debt. He indicated that financial pressures were a significant factor, mentioning the need for funds for his father’s medical care in India, who has since died.

Discovery of Fraudulent Activity

A Florida Lottery investigator found that the stolen ticket books were cashed en masse at a singular retailer, a practice deemed unusual and suggestive of fraudulent activity. Following the appointment of a new manager by the store owner, police proceeded to the location and arrested Tanguturi.

Current Legal Status

Tanguturi is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with a bond set at $30,000. Additionally, authorities have issued an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer against him.
