In a remarkable demonstration of endurance and adventure, the Indian Army has launched a high-altitude expedition to Mount Kangto — one of the most challenging and least-scaled peaks in the Eastern Himalayas.
Officials said on Monday that Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, General Officer Commanding of the Gajraj Corps, flagged off the Mount Kangto Expedition (7,042 m) from a forward base in Arunachal Pradesh.
The mission team consists of 18 Indian Army soldiers who will attempt to scale the formidable peak, which was last successfully climbed in 1930.
A test of courage and endurance
According to Defence spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mahendra Rawat, the climbers will navigate treacherous terrain, icy ridges, steep glacial crests, and dangerously thin air.
“The expedition symbolises the Corps’ commitment to adventure, endurance, and excellence in some of the toughest terrains of the country,” he said.
The mission, themed “Josh in the Hearts, Summiting Mount Kangto!”, aims to celebrate the resilience and unyielding spirit of the Gajraj Corps, while inspiring a spirit of adventure among troops stationed in challenging border regions.
In a parallel initiative, officers from the ‘Dao Warriors’ Regiment of the Indian Army launched a nationwide outreach programme highlighting the Battle of Walong — the only counter-attack launched by Indian forces during the 1962 Indo-China War.
The awareness campaign, conducted during October and November, covered schools and colleges across Dimapur, Dibrugarh, Namsai, Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai. It aimed to educate students about the valour and sacrifice of Indian soldiers and Assam Rifles personnel who fought valiantly in Walong.
Honouring the bravehearts
The sessions saw enthusiastic participation from students and educators, with veterans sharing firsthand accounts of the battle — bringing history to life with personal stories of courage and sacrifice.
Lt Col Rawat said the initiative not only strengthened civil-military relations but also served as a fitting tribute to the soldiers who defended Walong with unmatched bravery more than six decades ago.
The twin efforts — scaling Mount Kangto and honouring the heroes of Walong — together reflect the Indian Army’s enduring commitment to courage, adventure, and national pride.
