India-France Relations Reach New Heights: French President Macron

The CSR Journal Magazine

French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that the bilateral relationship between India and France is currently at its “highest point.” Speaking to reporters during the India AI Impact Summit 2026 held in New Delhi, he noted that the two nations share a unique Special Global Strategic Partnership that is poised for further expansion. Macron stated that the strong ties between India and France have been consolidated over recent years, particularly in the defense sector, aided by his visit.

Frequent Engagements Highlight Strong Ties

This marks Macron’s fourth official visit to India as President. He referenced multiple interactions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting that they have met more than twenty times in recent years. “This collaboration has fostered an intensive agenda focused on a mutual vision for the Indo-Pacific region, where both nations aim to counter any form of dominance or conflict,” he added. Macron also extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to participate as a special guest at the upcoming G7 Summit in France.

Co-production of Rafale Fighter Jets

Discussions around defense were central to Macron’s address. He confirmed that India has expressed interest in co-producing Rafale fighter jets. “Our partnership transcends typical alliances; it is a Special Global Strategic Partnership,” he stated. He noted that India recently reaffirmed its willingness to enhance its order for Rafale jets, which includes a commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Macron expressed optimism about future collaborations in submarine technology as well.

Commitment to Indigenous Manufacturing

Macron expressed France’s commitment to increasing the number of locally manufactured components in India. He stressed that enhancing indigenous manufacturing not only strengthens India’s economy but also fosters strategic coordination between the two countries. “It creates job opportunities in India and aligns with our agreement to maximize the use of Indian components in critical device manufacturing,” he noted.

Free Speech and Digital Governance Remarks

In discussing free speech, Macron asserted that it must be accompanied by respect and transparency. He conveyed concerns about the algorithm-driven defense of free speech that often lacks openness. “True free speech involves mutual listening, not just unilateral expression,” he remarked. He cautioned against the spread of hate and racist speech disguised as free speech.

Highlighting Defense Collaborations

Macron spoke about significant ongoing collaborations between France and India, including the joint project between Airbus and Tata Group to manufacture H-125 helicopters. He reaffirmed the strong relationship in fighter aviation through the Rafale jets and mentioned ongoing cooperation regarding submarines, having already provided the Indian Navy with six Scorpène submarines. “Defense stands as a critical pillar of our relationship,” he stated.

Macron’s Vision for Inclusive AI Development

During the India AI Impact Summit, Macron articulated a vision for inclusive and cooperative development in the field of artificial intelligence. He underscored the importance of resisting digital fragmentation and promoting shared technological advancement among nations. Macron highlighted the urgent need to direct digital tools towards collective growth as tensions rise globally. He expressed confidence that both France and India would work collaboratively under their respective leaderships on this endeavor.
