India Evaluates Naval Escort for Vessels in Strait of Hormuz Amid Middle Eastern Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is exploring the option to deploy naval vessels for the protection of its commercial ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route in the context of rising tensions in the Middle East. Reports indicate that this consideration follows requests from Indian shipowners seeking increased safety for their vessels.

Capt. P.C. Meena, a senior official with the Directorate General of Shipping, confirmed that the Indian government is reviewing the possibility of sending warships to provide naval escorts in response to the prevailing security threats.

Strait of Hormuz: An Increasingly Dangerous Zone

The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a critical hotspot for maritime operations, particularly as hostilities have heightened involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. The ongoing conflict, which has now entered its second week, has not only disrupted maritime traffic but also raised significant concerns about the stability of energy supplies in the region. The Middle East is responsible for approximately 55 percent of India’s crude oil imports, with around 35 percent passing through this important waterway.

Impact on Energy and LPG Supplies

India’s reliance on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports from Gulf nations such as the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait adds further urgency to this situation, given that nearly 80 percent of India’s LPG imports transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Recent reports indicate that numerous Indian vessels have faced difficulties in navigating the Strait due to the heightened security risks associated with the ongoing conflict.

Current Situation of Indian Vessels

As of earlier this month, about 38 Indian-flagged commercial ships with more than 1,100 sailors are reported to be stranded in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. In response to this troubling situation, Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has tasked relevant officials, including those at the Directorate General of Shipping, with ensuring the safety and security of Indian seafarers and maritime assets in these waters.

Comparative Actions by Neighboring Countries

In contrast, Pakistan has already taken measures to safeguard its commercial shipping in the region by deploying naval escorts. The Pakistani navy announced that its warships will accompany merchant vessels travelling in the Middle East to guarantee the seamless flow of national energy supplies.

Visual documentation from the Pakistani navy has shown warships escorting crude oil tankers belonging to its national shipping company, highlighting the proactive measures being taken by neighboring nations in light of the escalating tensions.

Shipping Industry Response to Security Concerns

Given the increasing security concerns, shipping companies have reported a slowdown or complete halt in energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. This decision comes as they navigate the risks associated with the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the challenges the shipping industry faces during turbulent times. The situation remains fluid, with significant implications for maritime safety and energy trade in the region.
