India Emphasises Reciprocity with Bangladesh Amid Sheikh Hasina Extradition Demands

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has reiterated its commitment to establishing positive and constructive relations with Bangladesh, focusing on mutual interests and reciprocity. This affirmation was made on Tuesday, coinciding with heightened pressure from Dhaka for New Delhi to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, maintained that India’s position regarding relations with Bangladesh has not changed.

Jaiswal stated, “Our position on the press conference by the former PM needs no repetition,” emphasising clarity in New Delhi’s stance. This reference pertains to Hasina’s public remarks made during her interaction in New Delhi on August 5, which may have contributed to the ongoing diplomatic tension between the nations.

Jaiswal also highlighted that India’s approach towards extradition requests remains unchanged. “On the issue of extraditions, our consistent position has been that these requests are being examined as part of our established processes,” he noted, indicating India’s methodical approach to such requests.

Status of Tarique Rahman’s Proposed Visit

As tensions rise, uncertainty surrounds the proposed visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India. During the briefing, Jaiswal confirmed that there have been no recent developments regarding this potential visit. He reiterated that the invitation extended to Rahman remains open, but no specific date has yet been established for the trip.

The ambiguity surrounding Rahman’s visit follows statements from Dhaka indicating that a favourable political atmosphere is necessary for the trip to proceed. Authorities in Bangladesh have expressed their anticipation of a conducive environment essential for Rahman’s official visit to India.

Shahidul Karim, a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry, mentioned ongoing discussions between officials from both nations over the past few weeks. However, he noted that the initiative was complicated by Hasina’s open press interaction in New Delhi on August 5, which raised questions regarding diplomatic relations between the countries.

Bangladesh’s Extradition Requests and Diplomacy

Bangladesh continues to call for India’s swift action regarding the extradition of Sheikh Hasina as well as individuals accused of involvement in the assassination of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi. This request underscores the significance of extradition matters in the context of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Karim asserted that Bangladesh believes a favourable environment must be cultivated for the proposed visit of Prime Minister Rahman to materialise. He linked this necessary environment directly to the ongoing extradition appeals submitted to Indian authorities.

“We are of the view that a propitious environment needs to be created for the visit,” Karim stated, further noting that the resolution of the extradition requests is crucial in facilitating better diplomatic relations. Bangladesh is expecting a response from Indian officials regarding these requests, indicating the importance of timely communication in international diplomacy.

The extradition issue appears to be central to the uncertainties surrounding Rahman’s potential visit to India. While New Delhi maintains its position that these requests are being processed as per established guidelines, the situation continues to evolve under the pressures of international relations.
