The CSR Journal Magazine

The King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, has dedicated a Buddhist stupa to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognising his pivotal role in enhancing the bilateral relationship between India and Bhutan. This dedication was announced by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who highlighted the importance of this gesture in a post on X. The event took place during a significant ceremony in Gelephu Mindfulness City, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Lhabab Duchen.

Rijiju noted that this dedication is not merely a ceremonial act but a highly meritorious and spiritually significant gesture in Buddhist tradition. He stated that the stupa, specifically Stupa 76, represents a physical embodiment of the Buddha’s enlightened mind, thus making the dedication to PM Modi particularly meaningful. The Union Minister expressed gratitude to the King for this honour, reflecting the deep understanding and commitment shared between the two nations.

Historic Achievement in Stupa Construction

On November 1, Bhutan achieved a remarkable milestone by constructing 108 Buddhist stupas within a span of six hours. This extraordinary feat involved the participation of over 40,000 volunteers, monks, and artisans, who commenced their work after midnight. Rijiju described this accomplishment as a historic achievement for Bhutan, showcasing the collective effort and dedication of its people.

The construction of the stupas was marked by the ceremonial blowing of ‘Dungchens’, traditional long horns used in Buddhist rituals. The event not only celebrated the completion of these stupas but also reinforced the strong cultural ties between India and Bhutan. Rijiju’s attendance at the ceremony allowed him to witness the unity and spirit of the Bhutanese people, further emphasising the significance of this event in the context of bilateral relations.

Rijiju remarked on the spiritual depth of the occasion, stating that it reflected Bhutan’s rich Buddhist heritage and the enduring friendship between the two nations. His presence at the ceremony included paying respects and offering prayers alongside the King of Bhutan, Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, further solidifying the bonds of camaraderie shared by the countries.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

During his visit, Rijiju had the privilege of meeting with the King of Bhutan, where he conveyed warm greetings from PM Modi. He reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to the unique and enduring partnership between the two countries. This royal audience underscored the mutual respect and collaboration that characterise India-Bhutan relations.

Rijiju’s statements highlighted the importance of the stupa dedication as a symbol of the spiritual and cultural ties that bind India and Bhutan. He expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to participate in such a deeply meaningful occasion, which he described as a reflection of the rich traditions shared by both nations.

The dedication of the stupa to PM Modi serves as a testament to the ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties through cultural and spiritual exchanges. As both countries continue to collaborate on various fronts, the significance of such gestures cannot be overstated, marking a new chapter in their historical relationship.
