India and Nepal Sign MoU for Biodiversity Conservation Collaboration

The CSR Journal Magazine

Nepal’s Minister for Forests and Environment, Madhav Prasad Chaulagain, emphasised the profound cultural and environmental connections existing between India and Nepal. He remarked on the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on biodiversity conservation, as well as various cooperative initiatives in protected areas and the energy sector.

During a conversation, Chaulagain stated, “The ties between Nepal and India are deeply rooted in culture, religion, and spirituality, complemented by significant natural connections. Several initiatives are underway, especially in the realm of biodiversity.” He noted that he and Indian Minister Bhupender Yadav had recently observed the signing of this landmark agreement, illustrating the commitment of both nations toward environmental preservation and cooperation.

Progress in Renewable Energy Initiatives

Chaulagain highlighted Nepal’s commitment to advancing its renewable energy sector, with a strong emphasis on hydropower, while also prioritizing environmental sustainability. He pointed out ongoing efforts to enhance energy grids, construct eco-friendly infrastructure, and establish review mechanisms aimed at achieving the country’s climate targets for 2030 and 2035. He stated, “Hydropower serves as a vital renewable energy source, essential for shifting from systems that produce high emissions to electric vehicle-based mobility and cleaner cooking options.

Nepal possesses immense potential for hydropower generation, although irresponsible development could present risks.” As the leader of both the Ministries of Conservation and Development, Chaulagain acknowledged the challenges of balancing development with environmental conservation but affirmed the necessity of this balance.

Future Climate Goals

The Minister remarked on Nepal’s ongoing progress in the renewable energy sector, particularly in hydropower. Despite facing challenges, he confirmed that efforts to expand energy grids and develop environmentally friendly infrastructure are on track. He emphasised the importance of implementing review systems to maintain progress and safeguard the environment. Chaulagain added, “It is crucial for us to ensure that momentum is preserved while adhering to environmental safeguards.” With specific plans and targets established for 2030 and 2035, Nepal is poised to make significant strides in its commitment to sustainable energy practices.
