HP CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu Criticises Detention of Youths in Delhi

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, has voiced his apprehension regarding the recent detentions of youths in Delhi. He emphasised that the right to protest is a fundamental aspect of democracy, asserting that governments must be attuned to citizens’ concerns rather than stifling their voices. Sukhu highlighted that the rights enshrined in the Constitution were earned through extensive struggles and must be safeguarded.

During statements to the media, Sukhu underscored the importance of citizens’ rights, particularly emphasising that the right to vote is paramount in a functioning democracy. He asserted that if individuals perceive threats to this right, a resulting movement is a natural response. Sukhu’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment regarding the necessity for citizens to have a platform to express their grievances and demands.

Legal Actions and Democratic Principles

Sukhu announced that the Congress party is addressing the issue through legal channels and plans to approach the Supreme Court again on Monday. He reaffirmed his commitment to join the legal fight, stating that the party aims to ensure that the rights of citizens are upheld. He articulated that permission should have been granted for protests at designated sites, such as Ramlila Maidan, allowing voices to be heard without repression.

The Chief Minister noted the inappropriateness of measures such as internet shutdowns and the detention of individuals during demonstrations. He argued that these actions contradict the principles of a democratic society. Sukhu insists that any struggle should aim to foster public awareness, ultimately leading to a decisive verdict from the electorate in future elections.

In response to inquiries about the efforts of Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sukhu reiterated that Gandhi’s mission is to maintain a strong democracy while safeguarding constitutional values. He expressed his support for the Congress leaders’ ongoing fight to uphold the Constitution and encouraged the Central government to take the matter seriously.

Call for a Responsive Govt

In his address, Sukhu argued that governments should prioritise listening to the public and addressing any mistakes that may have occurred. He conveyed that efforts to silence dissent are counterproductive and can never entirely remove the citizens’ voices. The Chief Minister’s statements underline a crucial dialogue about the role of governments in a democracy, particularly during times of public unrest.

Furthermore, Sukhu emphasised that the right to protest is an essential tool for citizens in a democratic framework, calling for a responsive government that understands and acts on the needs of the populace. He expressed concerns about the government’s response to protests and advocated for a more open and accommodating stance regarding public demonstrations.

Overall, Sukhu’s remarks serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in upholding democratic values, particularly in the realm of public expression and protest. He highlighted the importance of balancing order with the rights of citizens, suggesting that a healthy democracy thrives on the active participation of its constituents.
