Sensex Rises 482 Points to 73,606.75, Nifty Closes Above 22,750

The CSR Journal Magazine

The stock markets exhibited a recovery on Monday following a sluggish opening, with the Sensex increasing by nearly 483 points and the Nifty closing above 22,750. This rebound was attributed to buying activity in metal, IT, and other major stocks. Despite this positive movement, factors such as elevated crude oil prices, a weakening rupee, and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties kept investors on edge.

The BSE Sensex concluded the day at 73,606.75, marking an increase of 482.92 points or 0.66%. The index initially opened at 72,990.04 and dipped to an intraday low of 72,514.57 before recovering to reach its peak at the close. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty 50 gained 153.20 points, or 0.68%, finishing at 22,753.20 after bouncing back from an intraday low of 22,387.35.

Support from Metal, IT, and Pharma Stocks

The recovery in the stock indices was bolstered by strong performances in metal stocks, with the Nifty Metal index rising by 2.21%. The Nifty Pharma index also saw an increase of 1.76%, while the Nifty IT index advanced by 0.87%. Among the stocks listed on the Sensex, Adani Ports emerged as the leading gainer, climbing by 2.72%. Eternal followed closely with a gain of 2.56%, and Tata Steel rose by 1.52%.

Other notable gainers included Bharti Airtel, which increased by 1.43%, and ITC, which advanced by 1.24%. Reliance Industries and Infosys also contributed positively, gaining 1.01% and 0.91%, respectively. Conversely, Bajaj Finance experienced a decline of 0.76%, while HDFC Bank fell by 0.56%. HCL Technologies also reported a loss of 0.42%, along with Power Grid and Maruti Suzuki, which closed lower.

The broader market reflected similar recovery trends, with the Nifty 100 rising by 0.73%, the Nifty 200 gaining 0.82%, and the Nifty 500 advancing by 0.85%. Midcap and smallcap stocks rebounded following previous corrections, with the Nifty Midcap 50 rising by 1.25%, the Nifty Midcap 100 gaining 1.19%, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 advancing by 1.38%. Sector-wise, the Nifty MidSmall IT and Telecom index increased by 2.34%, while the Nifty MidSmall Healthcare index rose by 2.19%.

Focus on Crude Oil Prices and Currency Fluctuations

Crude oil prices eased slightly on Monday but remained high amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Brent crude futures fell by 1.40% to $115.09 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude declined by 1.85% to $101.36. The Indian rupee faced pressure, dropping by 0.3% against the US dollar to 95.1850, as importers increased their dollar purchases.

The high crude prices continue to be a concern for India, as they may elevate the import bill, fuel inflation, and exert pressure on corporate margins. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that Indian equities managed to recover from early losses, driven by value buying and strength in sectors such as metals, power, and healthcare.

However, Nair cautioned that elevated crude prices, geopolitical uncertainties, and anticipation of policy decisions from the US Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and Bank of Japan could limit investor confidence. He mentioned that while early quarterly results indicate a commodity-led earnings boost in sectors like power generation and metals, high energy costs and interest rates may moderate overall corporate growth in the upcoming quarters.

Investors are likely to keep a close watch on crude oil prices, geopolitical developments, and forthcoming central bank decisions for further market direction. The sustainability of the recovery will depend on quarterly earnings, foreign investor flows, and continued buying interest in midcap and smallcap stocks.
