Horrific Incident at Mumbai’s Mulund Station as Man Pushes Wife in Front of Train

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a tragic sequence of events in Maharashtra’s capital, a routine day at Mulund station turned catastrophic on March 14. Pushpa, unaware of the dangers around her, stood on Platform 1 when her husband, Raju Gupta, allegedly pushed her onto the railway tracks just as a local train was arriving. The impact was immediate and fatal, leaving commuters shocked as the train came to an abrupt halt. In the chaos that followed, Gupta disappeared into the throngs of passengers.

Details of a Domestic Dispute

Leading up to this horrifying incident, a heated argument had erupted between Pushpa and Raju. Pushpa had journeyed from Deoria in Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai with her brother, Kamlesh Kumar Gupta, and her child that same day. Following their dispute, the couple sought intervention at the Mulund police station, likely in hopes of defusing the escalating conflict. After their visit, Kamlesh briefly returned home to collect a forgotten wallet. During this short absence, the tragic events at the station unfolded.

Witnessing the Unthinkable

As commuters witnessed the scene, the reality of the situation proved difficult to comprehend. With a crowded platform and a train approaching, Pushpa was pushed onto the tracks in a moment that felt surreal to onlookers. The accused fled the scene almost immediately, attempting to blend into the vast network of Mumbai’s commuters. Raju switched off his mobile phone, seemingly to evade capture.

Investigation Unfolds with CCTV Evidence

The Railway Police Crime Branch, along with teams from various local police units including Thane, Dadar, and Wadala, initiated a coordinated manhunt. CCTV footage became instrumental in reconstructing the events. Investigators meticulously followed Raju’s movements as he was recorded leaving Mulund station, travelling to Thane, and then taking a fast local train to Dadar.

He subsequently shifted to the western line, making his way towards Virar. Nearly 150 surveillance cameras were analyzed, slowly piecing together his whereabouts as he attempted to escape out of Maharashtra.

Arrest Made in Gujarat

As investigators traced Gupta’s trajectory, the investigation led them to Gujarat. A dedicated team from the Mumbai Police, in collaboration with the Surat local crime branch, set a trap. Raju Avadhram Gupta, 42, was apprehended in Surat within 20 hours of the incident.

During interrogation, he admitted to the crime, attributing his actions to ongoing domestic disputes and heightened tensions. Consequently, a case was registered against him under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, encompassing murder. Authorities continue to investigate, compiling details leading up to the tragic event.
