India Joins Six Other Countries Interested in Hosting 2036 Olympics

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has taken a significant step towards potentially hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that the nation is among seven National Olympic Committees (NOCs) expressing interest in hosting the event. This announcement follows the conclusion of the deadline for other NOCs to indicate their interest in the Olympic Games, with no additional countries coming forward.

The seven interested parties include Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, and Turkey. India’s inclusion in this list is a notable development in its ambition to host the Olympics for the first time. While the country has successfully organised various international sporting events, such as the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, hosting the Olympics would mark a major milestone in Indian sports history.

The IOC initially made the list of interested countries public on October 6, as part of its commitment to transparency in the host selection process. The decision to confirm the interested parties was ratified by the IOC Session in June, which subsequently set a deadline for other nations to join the discussions.

Next Steps in the Selection Process

The IOC has outlined the forthcoming stages in the selection process for the 2036 Olympic Games. In November 2026, the seven interested parties are expected to present their proposals virtually to the Future Host Commission. Following these presentations, the IOC will conduct feasibility assessments by March 2027.

March 2027 will also see the IOC Executive Board initiate the 2036 Strategic Dialogue, marking another significant milestone in the selection process. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, an IOC member and Chair of the Future Host Commission, emphasised the importance of the interest shown by the seven nations and the new changes being implemented in the selection process.

This will be the inaugural edition of the Olympic Games selected under the “Fit for the Future” reforms. Grabar-Kitarovic noted that the strong interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics reflects the recognition of the social and economic benefits that the Games can bring to local communities. The IOC intends to collaborate closely with all seven interested parties to assist them in developing their proposals.

India’s Preparations for Hosting the Olympics

As India moves forward in this competitive process, the coming months will be crucial for the nation to formulate a robust proposal demonstrating its readiness to host an event of such scale. Key considerations for the proposal are expected to include infrastructure, sporting facilities, transportation, accommodation, and long-term sustainability.

With seven countries now officially in contention, India’s aspirations to host the Olympics have entered a critical phase. However, it is important to note that the confirmation of interested parties is merely the beginning of an extensive evaluation process. The final decision regarding the host for the 2036 Games remains some time away.

India’s participation in this process reflects a growing ambition to elevate its status in the global sports arena. The country aims to leverage this opportunity not only to showcase its capabilities but also to inspire future generations of athletes and sports enthusiasts.
