Heavy Snowfall in Sikkim Strands 350 Tourist Vehicles Near Tsangu, Rescue Ops Underway

The CSR Journal Magazine

On February 23, heavy snowfall began impacting the Tsangu area between Sipsu and the 16th Mile along the Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Sikkim around 11:30 AM, leading to approximately 350 tourist vehicles becoming stranded. Local authorities reported significant accumulation of snow in the Sherathang region, prompting the army to halt vehicular traffic as a safety precaution.

Rescue Operations Mobilized

In light of the situation, nearly 150 vehicles have become trapped between Sipsu and Tsangu (also known as Changu). A coordinated rescue operation has been launched that involves police forces, the Army, the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF), and local residents. Their primary objective is to safely evacuate tourists and drivers from the affected areas.

Temporary Accommodations Established

As part of the ongoing rescue efforts, around 46 tourists, including children, have been relocated to the Army Transit Camp at 17th Mile for temporary shelter. This measure is designed to ensure their safety until weather conditions improve and the roads can be cleared for safe transport.

Future Steps in Rescue Operations

Rescue operations remain active, with teams continuously working to secure the remaining stranded vehicles and safely reroute them as conditions allow. Updates indicate that efforts will be intensified to assist any individuals still caught in the snowbound zone once the weather stabilizes.

Tsangu’s Tourist Significance

Tsangu is a well-known destination for travelers in Sikkim, attracting a large number of visitors each season. The region is characterized by sudden weather fluctuations and heavy snowfall, particularly during the winter months, frequently leading to temporary road closures and interruptions for tourists traversing this high-altitude area.
