Has Bundi district in Rajasthan become a child marriage hotspot? multiple cases prompt prohibitory orders

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a shocking case of existing custom of child marriage in Rajasthan, two girls aged 17 residents of Bundi district in Rajasthan approached Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Talera village Rajesh Tailer to stop their marriages that is scheduled for February 10.  The two girls are currently studying in standard 12 and were forced to marry. One of the girls approached the DSP to stop her marriage. Upon the complaint, DSP acted promptly and issued prohibitory orders also and summoned the teenagers’ family members and spoke to them. The family members were informed about the existing legal provisions.

As per Bundi Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Chairperson Seema Poddar, the prohibitory order has been issued to the family members and there will be a restriction on her marriage until she turns 18. Currently, the girl has been shifted to a government shelter home in order to keep her safe.

Another case of child marriage in Bundi

In a similar case, a 16-year-old girl who is studying in an open school, approached Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Chairperson Seema Poddar to intervene and stop her marriage that was scheduled on February 10. She shared that her family has fixed her marriage with a 20-year-old man who is a resident of Bhilwara district in Rajasthan.

In her case when her parents came to know that she had approached CWC to intervene and stop the marriage, her parents tried to postpone the marriage to February 9 and even shift her to a different location. However, CWC, along with Childline and the police, managed to trace the teenager and take her in protection. At present she is in a shelter home and is safe.

Regarding her education, CWC is in discussion with authorities to change her exam centre so that her education continues and she is safe.

Has Bundi turned Child Marriage hub?

In recent times at least a dozen of prohibitory orders have been issued in order to stop child marriages. Looking at the increase in such cases, CWC, police have appealed to parents to follow law and not force their girls into marriages. CWC is spreading messages on rights, education, and safety of children. Besides, police have started a helpline number 1098, to report child marriages in the locality.
