Gujarat is making significant strides in sustainable and environmentally friendly development as it modernises its road infrastructure. In alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for rapid large-scale growth, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has announced an allocation of Rs 1,147 crore in the current year’s budget for the creation of climate-resilient roads employing advanced technologies. This initiative aims to bolster the state’s transport network while adhering to eco-friendly practices.

Details of the Road Projects

The development plan encompasses the construction of 20 roads across various districts in Gujarat. The projects include the Lanwa-Manund-Sander-Balisana Road and the Radhanpur-Mashali-Madhapura Road in Patan district, along with the Bhidiya Somnath Road in Gir Somnath. Additional projects feature the Santrampur-Jalod Road in Mahisagar and the Dayadara-Nabipur-Janor Road in Bharuch, among others. Each selected roadway will undergo enhancements such as widening, resurfacing, and the installation of environmental features, tailored to meet local needs.

Several roads will incorporate advanced features such as RCC gutter lines, four-laning, and white topping. Techniques such as rumble strips, side shoulders, and proper road furniture will also be integrated into the construction process. The initiatives are designed not only to improve quality but also to ensure that the environmental impact remains minimal.

The methodology involves the reuse of existing materials during reconstruction, significantly contributing to sustainability goals. The old road surface is excavated and treated, followed by spreading recycled materials, ensuring that resources are wisely utilised. This approach reinforces the road base while reducing overall construction expenses and environmental footprint.

Innovative Technologies for Road Longevity

The projects will implement cutting-edge construction technologies designed to enhance the durability and longevity of roadways. After excavation, a specially formulated Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI) will be utilised to further strengthen the installation. This high-tech fibre sheet is placed prior to asphalt application, designed to mitigate cracks and absorb vehicular stress, which ultimately prolongs the road’s useful life.

In addition to extending lifespan, the use of green technology has the potential to significantly lower carbon emissions while conserving natural resources. By promoting the recycling of materials such as soil, old pavements, and metals, the state aims to foster eco-friendly construction practices that benefit both the environment and local economies.

As part of this green initiative, reconstruction work valued at Rs 50 crore has also been approved for the Jambusar-Tankali-Deola road in Bharuch district. This particular road serves as an essential link to the pharmaceutical bulk drug park, enhancing connectivity between various industrial and agricultural sectors, and streamlining access to regional transportation hubs.

Anticipated Economic Impact

The enhancement of the Jambusar-Tankali-Deola road will notably facilitate better connectivity to key locations including the ONGC plant and local shrimp farming areas. This vital infrastructure improvement is expected to benefit not only the local population but also the industrial units operating within the region.

By improving access to clusters of development, the upgraded road network will likely stimulate economic activity throughout Gujarat, connecting burgeoning industries to major transport routes like railways and expressways.
