Gujarat Initiates Comprehensive Foot and Mouth Disease Vaccination Campaign

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Government of Gujarat has launched a statewide vaccination initiative focused on controlling the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). The campaign commenced on March 1 and is scheduled to run until April 15, as part of the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP). This effort is designed to enhance livestock health and shield farmers from potential economic downturns related to disease outbreaks.

Foot and Mouth Disease: Impact on Livestock

Foot and Mouth Disease is a highly infectious viral ailment that affects cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, buffaloes, sheep, and goats. Symptoms often include fever, lesions in the mouth, and excessive salivation, which can lead to a marked reduction in both milk production and overall animal productivity. For dairy farmers, such infections can result in considerable financial repercussions.

Identification and Monitoring of Vaccinated Animals

The vaccination campaign includes a system for identifying animals through ear-tagging; relevant data is uploaded to the Information Network for Animal Productivity and Health (INAPH) portal. This digital resource enables authorities to monitor vaccination coverage and animal health, ensuring that livestock throughout the state are adequately protected against the disease.

Expert Insights on Preventative Measures

According to a Veterinary Officer in Lodra, routine vaccination is crucial in preventing outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease. He noted that affected animals typically experience mouth ulcers, fever, and salivation, which lead to decreases in milk output. He emphasized the importance of biannual vaccination drives, held every March and September, to mitigate financial losses for cattle owners.

Local Farmers Support the Initiative

Local cattle owners have expressed positive feedback regarding the vaccination initiative. A farmer from Lodra who owns a herd of 33 cows and two buffaloes, pointed out that government officials regularly visit to administer vaccinations. He highlighted the significance of the drive, stating, “We understand the importance of this vaccination drive and fully support it so that our cattle remain healthy.”

Current Vaccination Progress in Lodra

The village houses approximately 750 cattle and other livestock, with around 40 percent having already received vaccinations under the ongoing campaign. Officials assert that sustained, large-scale preventive vaccinations are essential for controlling Foot and Mouth Disease, thus moving towards the long-term goal of eradication while safeguarding the livelihoods of dairy producers in Gujarat.
