Gujarat CM Patel Launches Development Projects for Tapi District

On March 30, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated various development projects worth around Rs 1,600 crore aimed at enhancing infrastructure in tribal areas of Tapi district. This virtual event, conducted from Gandhinagar, included the foundation laying of lift irrigation systems such as the Ukai reservoir-based Songadh, Uchhal, and Nizar schemes, along with the Borisavar Yojana designed to improve agricultural water supply.

Emphasis on Holistic Development

During the event, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of comprehensive growth in tribal regions, a focus shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Patel noted that under Modi’s previous leadership as Chief Minister, significant attention was directed towards tribal welfare through the Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana. He remarked on the critical role that water availability plays in development efforts. Detailed plans for channeling water from the Ukai Dam to mountainous areas were discussed to help the agricultural sector.

Impact on Agriculture

The irrigation schemes will significantly benefit local farmers, providing them with year-round water resources. This initiative aims to enhance agricultural productivity and improve living standards for thousands of households in the region. According to the information provided, the Songadh, Uchhal, and Nizar schemes are expected to irrigate 28,000 hectares of farmland across 136 villages, while the Borisavar scheme will serve more than 8,000 hectares in 29 villages within the Songadh and Vyara talukas.

Support for Farmers and Infrastructure Improvement

Naresh Patel, the State Tribal Development Minister and in charge of Tapi district, referred to Tapi as a lifeline for South Gujarat. He affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that development reaches every citizen through welfare initiatives and infrastructure enhancements. He urged local farmers to take advantage of subsidies available for drip irrigation and the various benefits stemming from the new lift irrigation projects.

Highlights from the Inaugural Event

Ishwarsinh Patel, the Minister of State for Water Resources, elaborated on Gujarat’s strategic management of water resources, underlining the significance of the newly launched irrigation schemes. The event, held at Babarghat in Uchhal, featured a presentation showcasing the anticipated benefits of the projects and farmers’ prosperity. Ministers Naresh Patel, Ishwarsinh Patel, and Dr. Jayram Gamit welcomed the waters of the Tapi River ceremonially at the venue.

Attendance and Community Involvement

The inauguration witnessed the participation of various stakeholders, including District Panchayat President Jalamsinh Vasava, district leader Suraj Vasava, Secretary of the Water Resources Department P C Vyas, and District Collector Vipin Garg. Local leaders, officials, and numerous villagers and farmers were also in attendance, marking a significant community engagement with the projects introduced during the event.
