Government Set to Approve Rs 18,600 Crore Assam Tunnel Project Ahead of Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Union Cabinet is poised to discuss one of India’s significant infrastructure initiatives during its upcoming meeting in South Block. Sources indicate that the long-awaited underwater road and rail tunnel in Assam, a project valued at approximately Rs 18,600 crore, may receive necessary approvals. The proposed development will involve the construction of a twin-tube tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River, connecting Gohpur on the northern bank to Numaligarh on the southern bank.

Details of the Underwater Tunnel Project

If the proposal is ratified, it will represent India’s inaugural underwater tunnel engineered for both vehicular traffic and rail transport. Officials have stated that the twin tunnels are designed to be unidirectional and will be constructed at a depth of around 32 metres beneath the riverbed. Each tube will feature two lanes, and one tube will also accommodate a single railway track, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s infrastructure capabilities.

Project Scope and Travel Time Reduction

The comprehensive project length, which includes the underwater section, approach roads, and related railway infrastructure, is estimated to measure 33.7 kilometers. According to officials, the tunnel is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time between Gohpur and Numaligarh from nearly six-and-a-half hours to roughly 30 minutes. The effective travel distance is projected to decrease from approximately 240 kilometers to about 34 kilometers.

Strategic Importance of the Tunnel

Beyond enhancing civilian transportation, the project is designed to facilitate more rapid deployment of security forces and military equipment during emergency situations. Sources have indicated that the tunnel will also improve connectivity with the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. This strategic advantage will be vital for reinforcing the region’s security and economic development.

Broader Infrastructure Discussions in the Cabinet

The Cabinet is expected to review several additional road and railway initiatives, with the combined financial requirement for these projects estimated to exceed Rs 40,000 crore. These discussions coincide with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Assam, where he is set to inaugurate an emergency landing facility. Elections for the 126-member Assam Assembly are anticipated to take place in March and April of this year.
