A government officer involved in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bengaluru was reportedly assaulted by a group of approximately eight individuals. This incident occurred after the officer refused to add “Bangladeshis and Pakistanis” to the electoral list. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader S. Harish made the allegations during a press conference on Thursday, highlighting concerns over the safety of government employees engaged in this electoral process.

Superintendent-rank officer Fakirappa was overseeing electoral revision activities at ten booths in the Pulakeshi Nagar constituency when the incident allegedly took place. Harish claimed that Fakirappa suffered serious injuries as a result of the attack, which included being dragged along the road and physically assaulted. The officer was allegedly threatened with inclusion of individuals he classified as “infiltrators” without valid documentation.

According to Harish, Fakirappa was later admitted to a hospital due to multiple injuries, including damage to his teeth and cuts on his lips. The BJP leader expressed concern that local leaders may be attempting to suppress details of the incident. The officer’s apparent fear was such that he reportedly hesitated to speak about the ordeal.

Arrests and Ongoing Concerns

Harish stated that while three suspects have been arrested in connection to the assault, several others allegedly involved remain at large. He further claimed that the individuals responsible for the attack have connections to previous unrest during the 2020 DJ Halli violence, where similar acts of aggression were reported against the police and public property.

During the press conference, Harish challenged the effectiveness of the current government in addressing the issues at hand, particularly under the leadership of Karnataka’s Home Minister, Priyank Kharge. He questioned the government’s commitment to safeguarding public officials tasked with vital electoral responsibilities, stating that officials should not face violence while fulfilling their duties.

The BJP president’s remarks called for heightened security measures for officers involved in the electoral revision process. Harish reiterated that the attacks against public servants demonstrate a broader issue of safety in the region and demanded that authorities take more decisive action to address these threats.

Political Responses and Demands for Resignation

In light of the incident, Harish asserted that Priyank Kharge should resign from his position, as he contended that the Home Department is failing to protect government officials. He drew a parallel to the opposition’s calls for the resignation of former Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged misconduct related to NEET exams, positioning his party’s demands as similarly urgent and necessary.

The BJP has framed the incident involving Fakirappa as indicative of a broader culture of violence against public officials, urging immediate action to ensure their safety. Harish’s demand for the resignation of the Home Minister reflects ongoing political tensions and concerns about law and order in the state.
