Government Appoints Two Senior Officials in Petroleum Ministry Amid LPG Supply Concerns

The CSR Journal Magazine

The central government has assigned two senior officials to crucial roles within the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas amid rising worries regarding fuel availability linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Official notifications confirm the appointment of Alok Tripathi, an officer from the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), as the new Joint Secretary of the ministry. Additionally, A Amarnath from the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) has been designated as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the Joint Secretary level. These appointments have taken place at a time when reports of panic buying of LPG cylinders have emerged from various states due to fears over energy supply interruptions stemming from the West Asia situation.

Increased Demand and Consumer Response

Long queues have been observed outside LPG distribution centers in multiple states, including Delhi-NCR, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha. Consumers are hurrying to secure domestic gas cylinders amid concerns about potential shortages. This surge in consumer demand has also prompted some restaurants to temporarily halt their operations, and there are reports of hoarding in certain areas. The increased bookings have raised alarms across the country, showcasing a growing fear among the public regarding LPG availability.

Government Assurances on LPG Supply

Despite the heightened demand, the Centre has assured that there is no shortage of liquefied petroleum gas in the country. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Petroleum Ministry, stated that domestic LPG production has risen by approximately 30 percent since March 5 to ensure a steady supply. “There is no need for panic buying, and no dealer has run dry on LPG,” she emphasized. Officials have reported that LPG bookings have surged to around 75.7 lakh, compared to an average of 55.7 lakh per day before the crisis, highlighting panic-induced consumer behavior.

Global Energy Route Disruptions

Concerns regarding the supply have been exacerbated by disruptions to global energy routes, particularly following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime channel between Iran and Oman. This narrow waterway is one of the world’s most significant energy corridors, typically accommodating a large portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. The closure has raised alarms about potential shortages and supply chain vulnerabilities.

Political Reactions and Protests

Opposition parties have reacted strongly, staging protests in the Parliament complex over the alleged LPG shortages. Members from various political factions, including the Trinamool Congress and the Indian National Congress, have united to demand clarity from the government. They raised slogans and sought answers specifically from Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the status of LPG cylinder availability. In response, Minister Puri reiterated that there is no shortage of any petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, kerosene, aviation turbine fuel, or fuel oil. He assured that the availability of these products is fully ensured.

Supply Security Through Diplomatic Efforts

Puri further elaborated on how India has secured adequate crude supplies through alternative arrangements, notwithstanding the fact that around 45 percent of the country’s crude imports previously flowed through the Strait of Hormuz. He attributed the stability in supply to recent diplomatic outreach and efforts to diversify crude sourcing over the years, reinforcing the government’s commitment to maintaining energy security despite global challenges.
