Google Launches Rs 47 Lakh PhD Fellowship Programme, Apply Before April 30

The CSR Journal Magazine

Google has commenced the application process for its PhD Fellowship programme for the 2026 academic cycle, with India included among the qualified regions. The programme offers substantial financial support, with a stipend reaching up to Rs 47.4 lakh for distinguished PhD students focusing on innovative research in computer science and related domains. This fellowship is particularly crucial for researchers in India, as it mandates that universities nominate eligible candidates, limiting direct student applications. The application period began on March 5, 2026, and will close on April 30, 2026 at 11:59:59 PM UTC. Announcements regarding selections are anticipated by August 31, 2026, with public disclosures of awardees by October 31, 2026.

Application Process and Requirements

PhD candidates from India must be nominated by their respective universities to qualify for this fellowship. The award applies to individuals who are registered for full-time PhD programmes in computer science or related fields during the academic year of the award. It is important to note that being nominated for this fellowship does not ensure admission into a PhD programme. The participating universities must be accredited research institutions, and students are required to maintain full-time enrolment throughout the duration of the fellowship.

How to Apply for the Fellowship

The nomination process must be initiated by the university, as direct applications from students are not permitted. An official representative of the university is tasked with submitting the applications within the designated timeframe. For Indian applicants, the submission must consist of the student’s academic transcripts from their bachelor’s degree programme up to the current date, accompanied by two to three letters of recommendation and a one-page CV of the primary PhD programme advisor. All submission materials must be in English and uploaded as a single PDF file.

Fellowship Amount and Fellow Responsibilities

The fellowship extends two levels of financial support for Indian PhD students. Early-stage PhD candidates are eligible to receive USD 50,000 (approximately Rs 47.42 lakh) for a period of up to four years, intended to cover stipend, research expenses, and travel costs, including international travel. Conversely, late-stage PhD students qualify for USD 10,000 (around Rs 9.48 lakh) for a single year, which serves to recognise their research contributions and address similar expenses. This fellowship is research-centric, and recipients may delve into various fields such as computer architecture, algorithms and optimization, health research, human-computer interaction, machine learning, machine perception, natural language processing, as well as privacy, safety, and security. The assessment of proposals will be based on several factors, including research impact, academic performance, and leadership potential.

Significance of the Fellowship for Indian Researchers

This fellowship plays a pivotal role in supporting Indian PhD researchers affiliated with accredited universities that confer research degrees in computer science or allied fields. According to Google’s official announcement, India is listed among the regions where fellowships will be granted, with each Indian institution allowed to nominate up to three qualifying candidates for this prestigious programme.
