Gen Next Mumbai Holds Counter-Protest Against Cockroach Janata Party in Mumbai

The CSR Journal Magazine

A counter-protest was organised in Mumbai by a group identifying as “Gen Next Mumbai” against the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which was demonstrating against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This counter-demonstration took place on Friday, October 2, 2026, highlighting a division of opinions regarding the handling of electoral matters in India.

The protestors expressed opposition to statements made by figures like Abhijeet Dipke, who allegedly spoke about dismantling the Constitution. They convened to affirm their commitment to protecting the Constitution and engaged in a peaceful assembly at a notable location in the city, addressing the alleged threats posed by the CJP.

Participants stated their intention to uphold the values represented by the Constitution and the significance of their gathering beneath the statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar, a key figure in Indian constitutional law. Their goal was to showcase solidarity in defending democratic principles.

Details of the CJP Protest and Subsequent Reactions

Simultaneously, the Cockroach Janata Party and various civil society groups held their own protest at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, condemning the Election Commission and claiming irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. A strong police presence was noted at this site to maintain order during the demonstrations.

In New Delhi, security measures were enhanced due to a denied request for a demonstration, with prohibitory orders enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. This indicates a growing tension surrounding political protests in major urban centres.

Saurav Das, a spokesperson for the CJP, labelled Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar a “traitor”, claiming his actions were against national interests. He indicated that the protests would attract widespread support, particularly from the youth, who previously mobilised for the resignation of another official, Dharmendra Pradhan, indicating an ongoing trend of political activism among younger demographics.

Government Response and Official Statements

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, addressed the allegations levelled against the Election Commission, asserting that the claims had been previously refuted. He referred to a press conference held by the three Election Commissioners that allegedly clarified and dismissed the controversies surrounding the election processes.

Fadnavis urged that the accusations were unfounded and insisted that attempts to propagate a false narrative regarding the Election Commission would not succeed. This shows the government’s stance on ensuring the legitimacy of the electoral process amid rising public dissent.

The protests reflect underlying tensions related to electoral integrity, with allegations of misconduct and calls for accountability. The Election Commission has reportedly stated that all decisions linked to the SIR exercise were made unanimously, further complicating the rhetoric surrounding these demonstrations.

As political protests continue to unfold, the differing views on the election process in India raise questions about civic engagement and the state of democracy in the country, with various groups seeking to assert their perspectives on governance and electoral fairness.
