The discussion surrounding “regime change” has gained traction in India’s political landscape, coinciding with widespread protests in Delhi over alleged electoral irregularities. Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Various groups, including the CJP and left-wing student organisations, have been vocal in their calls for accountability, while the Congress party has initiated its own campaign against what it terms “vote theft.” Amid this turmoil, the BJP has launched a vigorous critique of the Congress, accusing it of inciting unrest to destabilise the government.

In a stark warning, the BJP has drawn parallels between the current protests and the upheaval in Bangladesh, which led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024. The party’s apprehensions were exacerbated by remarks from AISA leader Neha Bora, who praised the anti-Hasina protests, and senior advocate Prashant Bhushan’s public endorsement of “regime change.” The BJP has linked these statements to the ongoing protests led by Rahul Gandhi and his allies, raising questions about the protesters’ true motives.

The protests initially centred on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the call for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. However, the situation has evolved into a broader political conflict, with the BJP asserting that the protests may be aimed at undermining an elected government.

Bhushan’s Remarks Fuel Controversy

On October 15, during a press conference in New Delhi, Prashant Bhushan made statements that have since become focal points in the ongoing debate. He was accompanied by several prominent figures, including CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and AISA president Neha Bora. The conference aimed to address alleged electoral irregularities and police actions against protesters. Bhushan asserted that the ongoing situation could lead to a regime change if the current government’s actions continued unabated, framing it as a constitutional right for citizens to seek such change.

His comments provided the BJP with a basis to argue that the protests extend beyond mere electoral reform, suggesting a more profound agenda aimed at destabilising the government. The BJP has characterised these protests as part of a coordinated effort involving various groups to undermine democratic institutions.

In response to the escalating tensions, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has accused the Congress and its allies of inciting unrest among the youth, framing them as pawns in a larger scheme for political destabilisation. Singh’s remarks have intensified the BJP’s narrative that the Opposition is pursuing a regime change agenda reminiscent of events in Bangladesh.

Allegations of Foreign Influence and Political Mobilisation

The BJP has also raised concerns regarding foreign influence in the ongoing protests, with its national president, Nitin Nabin, alleging that the Congress and CJP are acting under the direction of external powers. This has added another layer to the controversy, as the ruling party attempts to link the protests to a broader narrative of foreign intervention in domestic politics.

Neha Bora’s comments, which drew inspiration from the protests in Bangladesh, have been particularly controversial. Her statements have been circulated widely, leading BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari to assert that such remarks indicate an intent for regime change, thereby threatening Indian democracy. The BJP’s strategy appears to be focused on consolidating its position by framing the protests as an existential threat to the current government.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Congress party has responded by reiterating its commitment to achieving change through electoral means. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera has dismissed the BJP’s claims as unfounded, asserting that the Opposition’s goal is to secure a democratic transition through elections rather than through any form of coercion.
