CJP Founder Abhijit Dipke Granted Conditional Bail After Arrest During Protest, Two Activists Remain in Custody

The CSR Journal Magazine

Abhijit Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), has been granted conditional bail following his arrest on Friday. He was detained near his residence while en route to participate in the CJP’s ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest at Central Park in Connaught Place. Dipke’s release is contingent upon signing a peace bond, which will prevent him from being sent to judicial custody.

Dipke was presented before the Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court after being arrested by Delhi Police on charges of breaching the peace. The allegations are based on Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Two other CJP activists, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, are currently in judicial custody following their attempts to enter the Jantar Mantar area.

Preventive Detentions During the Protest

During the same protest, Neha Bora, president of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), was also taken into preventive custody. Bora was detained while participating in the ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest march and was released early on Saturday morning after completing the necessary formalities under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act. In contrast, Dipke remained in custody until his court appearance.

Previously, on October 10, Dipke had signed a bond agreeing not to disturb the peace for one year after being detained by police at Delhi airport. This earlier incident also involved a separate case concerning breach of peace.

Following her release, Bora expressed her discontent with the Delhi Police and the central government, labelling the detentions as “illegal”. She called for the cessation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Response from AISA and Police Justifications

After her release, Bora stated that she had been detained for an entire night and questioned the legality of such actions by the police. She highlighted the ongoing issue of unlawful detentions in the country and demanded the immediate release of all detained protesters, including Dipke. Bora’s remarks were made in the context of a larger protest movement aimed at addressing these concerns.

AISA reported that Bora’s release followed significant public outcry and protests across the country. The organisation expressed gratitude to the media and supporters who stood by them during this challenging time. AISA reiterated its commitment to advocating for the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar and the rollback of the SIR exercise.

In response to the protests, Delhi Police stated that approximately 150 individuals had been detained to maintain law and order and ensure smooth traffic flow in the area. Security measures included the deployment of Rapid Action Force personnel within Central Park and additional forces stationed throughout Connaught Place.
