IIT Kanpur’s Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is set to receive an additional funding boost of ₹300 crore from Rakesh Gangwal, a distinguished alumnus and co-founder of IndiGo. This new contribution adds to his previous donation of ₹100 crore made in 2022, bringing his total support for the institution to ₹400 crore. The funds will be utilised for further development of the school’s infrastructure and outreach programmes.

Gangwal’s commitment includes matching grants of up to ₹300 crore, aimed at encouraging further contributions from other alumni, philanthropists, and supporters. This initiative aligns with IIT Kanpur’s strategic goal of enhancing medical education, fostering innovative research, and advancing MedTech initiatives. The vision is to cultivate a collaborative environment for medical professionals, engineers, and researchers to tackle contemporary healthcare challenges.

Plans for Advanced Healthcare Facilities

The Gangwal School is poised to initiate several critical healthcare facilities on the IIT Kanpur campus, which include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital and a 200-bed cancer care research centre. These facilities aim to facilitate medical education, enhance clinical research, and improve healthcare delivery in the region. The collaboration between various disciplines is expected to spur innovative solutions in the healthcare sector.

Prof Manindra Agrawal, the Director of IIT Kanpur, expressed gratitude for Gangwal’s contributions, highlighting the significance of interdisciplinary research in transforming healthcare delivery across India. He acknowledged that the initial donation greatly assisted in setting the institutional plans into motion and that the new funding will expedite the realisation of their vision.

Prof Anil K Lalwani, the newly-appointed Dean of the Gangwal School, remarked on the transformative nature of Gangwal’s contributions. He asserted that this financial support exemplifies the potential for individuals to spark positive change and that the school’s mission to integrate medicine and technology will have far-reaching benefits beyond the institute.
