The recent launch of a free bus service for female college students in the Baiga tribal region of Kui-Kukdur marks a significant step towards improving access to higher education. The initiative was introduced by Pandariya MLA Bhawna Bohra on October 9, 2026, in her constituency located in Kabirdham district, Chhattisgarh. This service is intended to provide transportation for students who previously faced challenges in attending college due to logistical constraints.
Ten buses will operate throughout the constituency, facilitating easier commutes for female students. The MLA has stated that this initiative is particularly beneficial for the parents of these students, alleviating their concerns regarding transportation and safety. Bohra, previously recognised for her healthcare efforts, has garnered further acclaim for her commitment to improving education access.
The formal launch took place at the helipad ground in Kui-Kukdur and involved additional ceremonies for the inauguration and foundation-laying of several development projects led by Chhattisgarh Cabinet Minister Tank Ram Verma. Approximately Rs 6 crore worth of projects were unveiled, including a new tehsil office, a Mahtari Sadan, and a college building, aimed at enhancing infrastructure in the region.
Addressing Educational Barriers for Girls
Minister Tank Ram Verma highlighted the importance of this new bus service in addressing educational barriers faced by female students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Many students in the region had reportedly dropped out due to a lack of reliable transportation options, which often led to interruptions in their education. Verma stated that this initiative aims not only to facilitate regular attendance but also to encourage more girls to pursue higher education.
In his remarks, he emphasised the commitment of the state government, led by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, to promote prosperity and progress within Chhattisgarh. The introduction of this service is seen as a vital measure to reduce dropout rates and enable female students to continue their studies without disruption.
Addressing the commuting challenges faced by female students is crucial, especially for those residing in remote areas where access to colleges can be arduous. The financial implications of daily commuting have been a significant hurdle for families from lower-income brackets, making this service a welcome development.
Community Response and Ongoing Support Services
Students have expressed enthusiasm about the new bus service, noting that it will significantly ease their daily commutes. Feedback from the community indicates that many had previously relied on long walks or bicycles to reach educational institutions. This new transportation option is expected to enhance attendance rates and foster a more conducive learning environment.
MLA Bohra’s initiatives extend beyond transportation, as she has also established a free ambulance service and a mobile testing laboratory to improve healthcare access in tribal-dominated areas. The ambulance service plays a crucial role in transporting patients to medical facilities, while the mobile laboratory offers testing services to communities that would otherwise face long trips for vital healthcare assessments.
In addition to these efforts, Bohra operates a free coaching centre at the Lakshya Centre in Pandariya, designed to assist students in preparing for competitive examinations. Her commitment to the community includes various social programmes aimed at encouraging a return to cultural roots, thereby enhancing community cohesion and support.
