Flood-affected families in Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, have been moved to a rehabilitation centre as relief operations are underway following severe flooding in the area. The local authorities are actively engaged in providing necessary aid and facilitating the rehabilitation of those impacted by recent torrential rains.

Infrastructure Damage and Power Restoration Efforts

The flash floods have resulted in considerable destruction to power infrastructure, including the loss of 15 transformers and damage to around 200 others. This has caused widespread disruption of electricity across Rajouri district, according to officials from the Power Development Department (PDD). PDD Executive Engineer Javed Akhtar has confirmed that restoration efforts are being conducted on a rapid scale. Multiple teams, comprising senior officers, engineers, field staff, and labourers, are working tirelessly to repair the damaged network. Additional personnel have been deployed to assist with the extensive restoration operations, and local residents are joining these efforts.

Despite facing significant challenges, including the washing away of several electric poles and extensive damage to other equipment, the PDD is committed to ensuring a comprehensive restoration of electricity to all areas impacted by the floods. Progress has been reported in some locations, while efforts continue in others that remain without power.

Monitoring Water Levels and Advisories to Residents

Earlier in the week, ongoing rainfall in Reasi and surrounding catchment areas resulted in increased water inflow into the Salal reservoir. In response, local authorities have opened all gates of the dam to manage the rising water levels. This measure has contributed to higher water levels in the Chenab River, leading to strong currents and flooding risks in downstream areas.

Heavy rainfall in Reasi over several hours has further escalated the water levels in both the Chenab River and the Salal Dam reservoir. Local authorities are maintaining careful surveillance of weather patterns and river conditions to anticipate any further complications.

Residents, particularly those in low-lying areas and alongside the Chenab, have been advised to exercise caution. The district administration and Rajouri Police have issued warnings urging people to stay vigilant during this time of elevated river levels, flash floods, and the possibility of landslides and waterlogging.

Residents are being encouraged to remain indoors unless essential travel is necessary.
