In response to the challenging flood situation in Keralam, Chief Minister VD Satheesan has mandated hourly assessments of conditions in affected areas. Following this directive, Vigneswari IAS, the Commissioner of the Disaster Management Authority, coordinated a meeting with District Collectors from Idukki and Kottayam to evaluate the current state of affairs. This initiative aims to ensure that appropriate measures are taken swiftly to address the ongoing crises.

As part of the preparedness strategy, SMS alerts regarding weather conditions have been disseminated to residents in the impacted districts. District Collectors in these areas have been instructed to assess local situations accurately and implement necessary actions, including evacuation procedures where needed. The focus remains on protecting lives and minimising damage from continuous rainfall.

Reports received as of Sunday indicate that five individuals may have been swept away in the TK Colony area of Amarambalam, Nilambur. Consequently, the Chief Minister has called for the immediate deployment of a special team from the Disaster Management Force to aid in the rescue efforts and assess the situation more effectively.

Casualties Reported from Landslide Incident

On the evening of September 21, a landslide in Kottakamboor, Vattavada, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left another critically injured. The landslide struck around 5 pm while the victims were engaged in cleaning garlic near their residence along the Kadavari route. The deceased have been identified as Balakrishnan and Chinnu, both locals from Kottakamboor.

Although Balakrishnan’s wife survived the incident with injuries, another individual sustained severe injuries and was promptly transported to Adimali Taluk Hospital by an ambulance. Eyewitness accounts establish that the victims were seeking refuge from heavy rain in a nearby shed when the landslide occurred, tragically burying them beneath mud and debris.

Devikulam MLA F Raja reported that three individuals were inside the shed at that moment. While one person was rescued, the other two were unfortunate casualties of the disaster. Following the immediate rescue efforts, the deceased were transferred to Munnar, with further procedures at Adimali Taluk Hospital set to take place the next day.

Flash Floods Lead to Additional Fatalities

The death toll from the recent flash flooding in the Chokkad River has reached three, as authorities confirmed the recovery of bodies of one woman and two men reported missing. As of Sunday, officials disclosed that the most recent body, that of a male victim, was found near Antonikkad. The situation has highlighted the urgent need for effective flood management in the region.

Efforts to locate other missing individuals continue as rain persists, stressing the importance of timely interventions and adequate disaster preparedness. The state government urges residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and adhere to evacuation orders as necessary, with local authorities working tirelessly to ensure safety and restoration.

Community members have also been engaged in rescue efforts, demonstrating solidarity in challenging circumstances. The ongoing evaluations by disaster management professionals aim to equip local officials with pertinent information, facilitating prompt actions to mitigate further loss and damage as the situation develops.
