First Steel Bridge Launched in Maharashtra for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent launch of a 100-metre-long steel bridge marks a significant milestone for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project. The bridge, weighing 1,405 metric tonnes, was successfully installed on September 25, 2026, over NH-3 in Dive-Anjur village, located within Bhiwandi, Thane district. This structure represents the first steel bridge completed for the high-speed rail line in Maharashtra.

Fabricated in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, the bridge was transported to Maharashtra, approximately 1,300 kilometres away, where it was assembled on site. This feat not only demonstrates logistical efficiency but also showcases the growing capacity of Indian industry to manufacture complex infrastructure components, supporting one of the country’s advanced railway projects.

The entire fabrication process involved meticulous steps including precision cutting, drilling, welding, and painting, adhering to strict designs and specifications. Each batch of steel underwent Ultrasonic Testing to ensure quality and safety, while welders and supervisors were certified by International Welding Experts, highlighting the emphasis on stringent quality control measures.

Innovative Construction Techniques Utilised

During the assembly of the bridge, innovative techniques were employed to ensure structural integrity. The bridge was erected on temporary trestles approximately 17.5 metres above ground, involving the use of 22 skid arrangements and 54,076 Tor-Shear Type High Strength Bolts (TTHSB) to secure the components effectively. Moreover, a C5 protective painting system and elastomeric bearings have been integrated to enhance the structure’s durability and manage vibrations.

After assembly, the bridge was repositioned using an automated mechanism comprised of two hollow jacks, each capable of lifting 150 metric tonnes, complemented by pre-tensioned Macalloy Bars. The operation was strategically scheduled during night-time to mitigate disruption for highway users while ensuring precision in execution, reflecting careful planning and commitment to minimise inconvenience.

Steel bridges are particularly advantageous for spanning highways, expressways, major rivers, and railway lines due to their capacity for longer spans. The specifications of this newly launched bridge include a height of 14 metres and a width of 14 metres, facilitating both structural requirements and operational efficiency for future rail services.

Progress of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Corridor

This newly launched bridge is part of a broader initiative under the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, which involves the construction of 28 steel bridges along the corridor. Currently, 16 of these bridges have been completed, indicating steady progress in the overall project timeline. The developments reflect India’s commitment to enhancing its high-speed rail infrastructure as part of its Make in India initiative.

As the project moves forward, the completion of such a critical infrastructure component not only underscores advancements in engineering and construction within the nation but also aims to significantly improve connectivity between two major economic regions. The completion of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail line is anticipated to revolutionise travel between these cities, providing faster, more efficient transport options.

Moving ahead, continued advancements and developments in this project are closely monitored, ensuring all standards of quality and safety are met through the remainder of the construction phase. As the infrastructure evolves, it promises to play a vital role in shaping the future of rail travel in India.
