Exotic Wildlife Trafficking Racket Exposed in Ahmedabad Residential Raid

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 1, the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch executed a significant raid at an apartment in the Navrangpura area, revealing an extensive illegal breeding and trafficking operation involving rare exotic animals and birds. The raid took place at ‘Ravalbhai Apartment’ and resulted in the confiscation of several valuable species, including a rare infant Red-handed Tamarin and multiple Persian cats and kittens, all housed in various cages within the flat.

Details of the Seized Species

Authorities reported finding a diverse array of exotic animals and birds during the operation. The haul included a Red-handed Tamarin infant, seven Persian cats and kittens, 14 hamsters of varying sizes, 15 Mini Lop rabbits, and nine Leather Lab Dwarfs. Additionally, the operation uncovered high-value exotic birds such as six African Grey Parrots, five Blue and Gold Macaws, three Eclectus Parrots, four Sun Conures, two Galah Cockatoos, and one Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. A significant number of African Lovebirds, Conures, Cockatiels, Budgerigars, and Finches were also discovered.

Concerns Over Public Health and Legal Violations

Initial inspections revealed that the documentation presented by the individuals involved through the ‘PARIVESH’ portal appeared to be incomplete and raised suspicions about its authenticity. Experts have expressed serious concerns regarding the potential risks posed to public health by keeping such a large volume of exotic and wild animals in a densely populated residential area. They noted that the absence of biosecurity measures and scientific infrastructure could lead to zoonotic diseases, which are diseases transmitted from animals to humans and pose a significant health threat to local residents.

Further Investigations to Follow

In light of the severity of the situation, the authorities plan to inform the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the Forest Department, and the Customs Department to initiate further investigations. These departments will collaborate on a comprehensive inquiry to assess the validity of the documentation, the legality of the animal imports, and the associated health risks posed to the nearby community. The involvement of multiple agencies highlights the urgency to address regulatory violations regarding exotic animal breeding within residential premises.
