Separated from its herd during a treacherous river crossing, the exhausted newborn faced certain death.

The calf’s savior came not from heavy machinery, but from the quick thinking of five local fishermen—Ajay, Rajesh, Gopal, Mittu, and Bishwanath Das. Risking their lives in a small rowboat against powerful currents, they chased the struggling animal, pulled it safely aboard, and brought it to dry land. Their selfless actions bought critical time for the local forest department to step in.What followed was an incredibly coordinated effort to locate the calf’s mother. Within two hours, officials tracked the anxious herd.

The subsequent reunion, captured on video, quickly went viral. The sight of the mother rushing forward to embrace and nurse her lost baby moved millions online. This dramatic rescue highlights how local communities and authorities can work hand-in-hand to protect wildlife, proving that empathy remains our strongest bridge to nature.

The mother elephant could barely contain herself when she spotted her calf from a distance. As soon as she came closer, she appeared to give the little one a stern telling-off almost as if saying, “Why didn’t you listen to me? Do you realise how dangerous it was? Did you ever think about what I must have gone through?” She then gave the calf a couple of gentle swats. But soon, the anger gave way to affection. She bathed her calf in the river and lovingly caressed it with her trunk. Finally, the mother elephant raised her trunk towards the rescuers, seemingly expressing her gratitude. The calf, too, wrapped its trunk around the neck of one of the rescuers and showed its affection before returning to its mother.

The rest of the elephant herd had been waiting a short distance away. The mother and calf, along with another elephant, then rejoined the herd and disappeared into the forest.

How Was the Elephant Calf Rescued?

For several days, relentless rain had turned the Teesta into a raging river. A group of fishermen was heading out onto the river to catch fish when they spotted something floating in the distance. As they moved their boat closer, they realised that it was an elephant calf. The tiny elephant was being swept away by the powerful current of the Teesta. Unable to stand by and watch the helpless animal struggle, the fishermen immediately sprang into action.

While the calf was being carried downstream by the fierce current, the fishermen chased after it in their boat. The rescue itself was extremely dangerous, as anyone could have been swept away in the turbulent waters. But the fishermen were determined to save the calf, no matter what the risk. After travelling several kilometres, they finally managed to get close enough to reach the animal. However, another challenge remained. With the river flowing at such speed, how could they safely lift the calf into their small boat? Despite the danger, the fishermen refused to give up. After considerable effort, they managed to get the calf aboard and turned the boat towards the riverbank.

By then, the calf’s physical condition was deteriorating. The fishermen had risked their own lives to save it. But rescuing the calf was only the beginning. They were now faced with another question how could they nurse the rescued elephant back to health and reunite it with its mother? Eventually, with the help and cooperation of forest department officials, the calf was successfully reunited with its mother.
