A 60-year-old man was killed in Karnataka’s Bengaluru during a morning walk following an elephant attack, which occurred when the animal roamed nearly 5 kilometres away from its natural habitat. The deceased, identified as Nagaraj, was reportedly attacked while he was walking in the vicinity.

In response to this tragic incident, Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy visited Rajarajeshwari Hospital to express condolences to Nagaraj’s family. He announced that a compensation of Rs 20 lakh would be provided to the family as a humanitarian act and in agreement with government guidelines. These measures aim to support the family during this difficult time.

Elephant Movements and Impact

According to Minister Reddy, recent construction activities in the area have led to elephants moving closer to human habitation. The new road construction reportedly facilitated this unusual behaviour by the elephants, posing risks to local residents. This incident has led to heightened concern regarding the safety of individuals living near forest boundaries.

Furthermore, the Forest Department is intensifying efforts to monitor and control elephant movements, particularly to prevent further instances of such attacks. They are focusing on ensuring the safety of the community in the Bannerghatta forest division and surrounding areas.

Enhanced tracking and monitoring methods have been outlined by officials to address the issue effectively. Authorities are aiming to restrict elephant movements that threaten human life and property, ensuring that wildlife can coexist peacefully alongside local communities.

Special Operation Initiated for Elephant Capture

In light of the incident, a special operation has been launched to locate and capture the lone elephant involved in the attack. The operation includes deploying approximately 100 forest personnel and forming three specialised teams from Ramanagara, Bannerghatta, and Bengaluru.

To assist in the operation, drone surveillance will be conducted to track the elephant’s movements more effectively. DCF Chakrapani reported that the animal has been located in the BM Kaval area, where combing operations are set to take place. These measures aim to secure the animal while ensuring community safety.

Authorities have urged residents to refrain from venturing into the area during this sensitive period, emphasising the need for caution. Additionally, the Forest Department will implement further strategies to ensure that elephants do not stray beyond the designated boundaries of the Bannerghatta forest division.
