The CSR Journal Magazine

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar convened a meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan in New Delhi. This meeting occurred following Jaishankar’s address in the Rajya Sabha, where he highlighted the Indian government’s proactive approach concerning the escalating conflict in West Asia. He emphasised that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally overseeing developments in the region and is focused on the safety of Indian citizens.

Safety Initiatives for Indian Citizens Abroad

During his speech in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar confirmed that formal advisories have been issued to Indian nationals located in Iran. He reinforced that ensuring the safety of citizens is of utmost importance to the government. The Minister stated that relevant ministries are collaborating closely to provide effective responses amid the evolving situation. Jaishankar mentioned that the Indian Embassy in Tehran remains operational, actively assisting students who are impacted by the ongoing unrest.

Efforts to Assist Stranded Indians in Gulf Nations

Jaishankar reported that the embassy has successfully facilitated the relocation of several students to safer locations. He also indicated that intensive efforts are in place to help Indians stranded in Qatar and Jordan return home safely. The Minister provided a somber update regarding the maritime disruptions caused by the conflict, informing the House that two Indian mariners have lost their lives, and one remains unaccounted for.

Geopolitical and Economic Context of the Conflict

The External Affairs Minister elaborated on the broader implications of the ongoing conflict, noting that it poses significant concern for India due to its geographical proximity. He underscored the importance of stability in West Asia, stating that approximately ten million Indians reside and work in Gulf countries, with thousands more in Iran for educational and professional opportunities. Jaishankar highlighted the region’s critical role in India’s energy security, citing it as a home to essential oil and gas suppliers.

Urgent Need for Dialogue and Diplomacy

Amid escalating tensions and worsening regional security dynamics, Jaishankar articulated the serious issues posed by potential supply chain disruptions. He warned that the conflict is spreading to other nations, causing significant destruction that adversely affects normal life. Reaffirming India’s stance on conflict resolution, he advocated for dialogue and diplomacy as essential pathways to de-escalation. Jaishankar reminded Parliament of a statement issued by the government on February 20, which expressed deep concerns and called for restraint from all parties involved.

Parliamentary Proceedings amid Opposition Disruption

Jaishankar’s remarks were made during a session of the Rajya Sabha marked by notable disruptions from opposition members, reflecting the intensity of the ongoing discussions related to the crisis in West Asia. The government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian citizens abroad remains a prominent element of its broader foreign policy approach, especially in light of recent developments in the conflict.”
