Ducati Launches Limited-Edition Formula 73 Motorcycle in India at Rs 20 Lakh, All Units Sold Out

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ducati has introduced the exclusive Formula 73 motorcycle in India, priced at an ex-showroom cost of Rs 20 lakh. This model is part of a limited global production run consisting of 873 individually numbered units. Following its launch, the entire allocation for the Indian market has reportedly sold out, and the manufacturer has ceased accepting further bookings.

The Formula 73 is a homage to the iconic Ducati 750 Super Sport Desmo, which made its debut in 1973. This motorcycle draws inspiration from the 750 Imola Desmo, a model that achieved victory in the 1972 200 Miglia di Imola race, piloted by renowned riders Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari. This victory is recognised as a significant milestone in Ducati’s history of production-based racing, which subsequently paved the way for the evolution of Superbike racing.

Combining classic styling with contemporary technology, the Formula 73 features a distinctive silver and aqua-green colour scheme. Its design includes a steel trellis frame, clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors, and a compact front fairing. A vertical gold stripe on the fuel tank replicates a notable detail from the original racing motorcycle, enhancing its vintage appeal.

Engine and Performance Specifications

The Formula 73 is powered by an 803cc, air-cooled L-twin Desmodue engine, which employs desmodromic valve actuation and features two valves per cylinder. This engine generates a power output of 73hp at 8,250rpm and delivers a torque of 65.2Nm at 7,000rpm. It meets Euro 5+ emissions standards and is equipped with a Termignoni exhaust system specifically designed for this model.

The motorcycle’s construction includes a steel trellis frame finished in aqua green, complemented by a 41mm upside-down KYB front fork and a preload-adjustable KYB rear shock absorber. For braking, it utilises a Brembo four-piston radial front caliper paired with a 330mm disc, ensuring reliable stopping power.

Riding on 17-inch spoked wheels fitted with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres, the Formula 73 has a front tyre size of 120/70 and a rear size of 180/55. The motorcycle’s kerb weight, excluding fuel, is recorded at 183kg, contributing to its agile handling characteristics.

Features and Technological Innovations

This limited-edition motorcycle is equipped with a 4.3-inch full-colour TFT instrument display, along with full-LED lighting that includes daytime running lights and self-cancelling turn indicators. Its electronic features encompass cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, multiple power modes, and a Ducati Quick Shift system, enhancing the riding experience.

Riders can select between two distinct modes: Sport and Road, allowing for tailored performance according to preference. Optional accessories available for the Formula 73 include an anti-theft system, the Ducati Multimedia System, heated grips, and turn-by-turn navigation, providing additional convenience and functionality.

In addition, Ducati has incorporated various billet aluminium components such as the brake and clutch levers with oil reservoirs and footpegs. A Rizoma fuel cap is included as standard equipment. Each motorcycle features its unique name and serial number on the steering plate, and buyers receive a certificate of authenticity along with historical photographs and sketches from the Ducati Style Centre, all presented in a specially designed box.

The Formula 73 is part of Ducati’s centenary celebrations, reflecting the design and engineering principles associated with the brand’s early Desmo-powered road motorcycles. With its limited production and sold-out status in India, this motorcycle is particularly aimed at collectors and enthusiasts looking for a unique piece of Ducati’s storied legacy.
