Pawesome ride: Scared of Diwali firecrackers, stray dog boards Kolkata metro

The CSR Journal Magazine

Metro rail commuters in Kolkata’s Girish Park Metro station were in for a ‘pawesome’ surprise on Monday after they were accompanied by a four-legged co-passenger on the train! Scared of the noise from firecrackers on Diwali day, a stray dog ran for life and took shelter in a moving rake of Kolkata metro!

While the presence of a dog on train initially left passengers in shock, gradually they started feeling entertained by the dog’s calm and composed manner and started recording videos and clicking photos of the stray. A video showing the same has gone viral on social media. In the video, the dog can be seen peacefully roaming around inside a coach without attacking or disturbing any passenger. Some of the passengers are also seen affectionately petting the stray, which sat on the floor near their feet.

Restriction on firecrackers in Kolkata

The Supreme Court and Calcutta High Court have issued strict orders to prevent the bursting of firecrackers on the night of Kali Puja. The time for burning firecrackers was also designated by the administration. Kolkata Police announced that the use of firecrackers during Kali Puja and Diwali this year will be restricted to a two-hour window from 8 pm to 10 pm on October 20. The police have been keeping a strict vigil. Despite this, it is alleged that as the night progressed, firecrackers were burst in several places. Due to which, a stray dog got into the metro out of fear.

Incidentally, despite the ban on the night of Kali Puja, it is alleged that the incidents of bursting firecrackers started increasing in different parts of Kolkata from 10:30 to 11:00 pm. Along with this, the air of the city also started to become heavy with the smell of gunpowder! 17 complaints were received in the control room of the Pollution Control Board till 9:30 pm. Almost all of them were related to firecrackers.

How Diwali affects stray animals?

Diwali turns terrifying for stray animals due to constant noise from firecrackers which they cannot tolerate. While people celebrate Diwali, stray animals feel scared due to loud noise and blinding lights of firecrackers, which overwhelm their sensitive hearing and vision. This can cause severe anxiety, stress, and panic, leading them to flee, get injured, or even die from accidents, burns, or heart attacks. The thick smoke also causes respiratory problems.

Stray dog rescued by authorities

Metro passengers claim that the dog somehow got into the rake after getting scared by the noise. Then, avoiding the eyes of the security guards, he climbed up on a rake. The station master of Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge) station informed the metro control room about the ‘infiltration’ after spotting the stray dog through the CCTV cameras inside the metro. The RPF and metro employees successfully de-boarded the dog at Shahid Khudiram Metro station.
