The CSR Journal Magazine

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that India can advance its national interests by aiding other nations and contributing to global welfare. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2026, he emphasised that doing good and serving national interests are not mutually exclusive. Jaishankar responded to a question posed by Swami Sarvapriyananda from the Ramakrishna Mission, who inquired about leveraging India’s spiritual popularity to enhance international relations.

Swami Sarvapriyananda pointed out that India’s spiritual heritage, including Vedanta and yoga, has garnered goodwill in the United States and other Western nations. He referenced the International Day of Yoga as a significant event that has positively influenced India’s global image. The monk encouraged Jaishankar to consider launching more initiatives akin to the International Day of Yoga to further utilise the existing goodwill.

In his response, Jaishankar highlighted that nations can foster friendships through various avenues, extending beyond politics and military might. He cited the International Day of Yoga as a successful example of such an initiative, which has not only promoted yoga but also created opportunities for international collaboration.

Promoting Millets and Sustainable Practices

Jaishankar introduced the concept of the International Year of Millets, which he noted has raised awareness about millets both in India and in Africa. He explained that this initiative has highlighted the nutritional and climate-friendly benefits of millets, which are part of India’s traditional diet but have been overlooked by many. According to Jaishankar, this initiative has resonated particularly well in Africa, where millets have a rich cultural significance that has been overshadowed by other grains.

Additionally, the minister discussed the importance of solar energy and the role of the International Solar Alliance. He stated that this initiative has been instrumental in promoting solar energy, enhancing awareness of the available technology, and providing technical support to various countries. Jaishankar underscored the need for collaborative efforts in addressing climate-related challenges and improving disaster response and preparedness.

Jaishankar asserted that there are numerous opportunities for countries to unite in addressing common issues, whether they pertain to yoga, nutrition, energy, or disaster management. He emphasised that India’s initiatives can serve as a model for international cooperation in these areas.

India’s Global Contributions During the Pandemic

Jaishankar pointed to India’s response during the Covid-19 pandemic as a prime example of its commitment to global welfare. He remarked that the support provided by India in terms of vaccine distribution has been a significant aspect of its diplomatic legacy. He noted that this effort has left a lasting impression on many countries, which continue to acknowledge India’s contributions.

Despite the world moving past the pandemic, Jaishankar indicated that discussions around the vaccines and the support provided by India remain prevalent in various nations. He reiterated the notion that India can play a pivotal role in uniting countries to tackle shared challenges.

Jaishankar concluded by stating that if the global community is not progressing positively, India’s proactive approach can contribute to a better direction for both the world and India itself. He expressed optimism about the potential for collaborative efforts to address pressing issues facing the international community.
