Google Introduces Blood Pressure and Insulin Resistance Tracking to Fitbit Air

The CSR Journal Magazine

Google is set to introduce blood pressure and insulin resistance tracking features to its Fitbit Air device, enhancing users’ ability to monitor their health. These functionalities will be integrated into the Google Health’s Health Guardian suite and are expected to be available later this month. The update aims to offer users new insights into their health metrics, enabling them to identify potential issues early.

With these new features, users will have the capability to track fluctuations in their blood pressure and insulin resistance. Additionally, they will receive monthly health reports and personalised health tips from the Google Health Coach. However, it is important to note that these features will only be accessible to subscribers of Google Health Premium.

How Blood Pressure and Insulin Resistance Tracking Operates

The blood pressure and insulin resistance tracking features are part of the broader Health Guardian suite designed by Google. Unlike traditional blood pressure monitors that require a cuff, the Fitbit Air employs its internal sensors to detect changes in blood flow over time. This method allows the device to identify trends in blood pressure without direct measurements.

For insulin resistance tracking, the Fitbit Air analyses health data collected over several weeks. This feature aims to detect how the body responds to insulin, which plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels. Instead of measuring insulin or blood sugar directly, the feature observes changes in bodily signals that may indicate potential health concerns.

Users of the Fitbit Air will receive a health report at the beginning of each month through the Google Health app. This report will detail changes in their health metrics over time. The insights gained can also be utilised by Google Health Coach to provide tailored health advice and suggest modifications to fitness routines.

Important Considerations and Availability in India

While these features are designed to assist users in understanding their health, Google emphasises that they are not substitutes for professional medical evaluations or tests. The Fitbit Air does not provide real-time blood pressure readings, nor does it measure blood sugar levels or diagnose conditions such as hypertension or diabetes. Users are advised against altering their medication based on the insights provided by the device.

The rollout of the Health Guardian features for Fitbit Air users in India is anticipated to commence later this month. To access these functionalities, users will need a Google Health Premium subscription, the Google Health app, and an active internet connection.

The Fitbit Air is currently available in India at a price of Rs 13,999. In conjunction with the health tracking update, Google is also enhancing automatic activity detection on the Fitbit Air as well as on Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Watch 5. This upgraded feature will now recognise over 100 different activities, a significant increase from the previous capability of 10 activities.

Google claims that the new system is nearly twice as accurate as before and has successfully reduced the number of missed workouts by more than half. This improvement is designed to automatically log workouts, even if users forget to initiate tracking manually, thereby providing a more seamless health monitoring experience.
