Recent derailments have raised important safety concerns regarding Pakistan Railways, highlighting potential lapses in the government’s commitment to passenger safety despite a surge in revenue. Following a successful revenue period spurred by the Eid festivities, the mood of celebration was quickly overshadowed when the Tezgam Express, traveling to Karachi, derailed in Punjab on the day following Eid. Several passengers sustained injuries during the incident, further amplifying public concern about railway safety.

Passenger Frustration and Trust Erosion

Travelers have increasingly voiced their dissatisfaction, pointing to a growing sense of unease regarding safety while using the rail services. Ahmed Raza, a frequent passenger, expressed that journeys have become more perilous due to recent accidents. He noted that while inquiries are frequently announced after derailments, substantial changes have yet to follow. Such sentiments underline a widespread erosion of trust among the commuter population, indicating that the issues may be systemic in nature.

Increasing Frequency of Accidents

Along with the Tezgam Express incident, the Shalimar Express, which operates between Lahore and other destinations, also experienced a derailment. Although these accidents have not always resulted in fatalities, the increasing occurrence of such events has raised significant alarms among riders. Concurrently, rail fares saw a rise in March, attributed to soaring diesel prices amidst global geopolitical issues. This fare increase further complicates matters, as passengers now expect safer and more reliable services alongside their financial contributions to the system.

Outdated Infrastructure Exacerbates Risks

Analyses of recent events point to a fundamental issue: ageing infrastructure. Many vital routes, including Main Line-1 and Main Line-2, continue to operate using outdated tracks and antiquated signaling systems. The rise in train operations without corresponding upgrades has heightened safety risks considerably. Railway officials have communicated that rehabilitation efforts are underway, with future plans to upgrade key segments, such as the Karachi-Rohri route, within the next three years. Despite these plans, officials acknowledge that modernizing the extensive railway network remains a long-term challenge.

Sustaining Demand Amid Safety Concerns

While the demand for train travel remains robust, particularly among lower-income groups, industry analysts caution that the focus on revenue growth alone cannot sustain the railway system. Without immediate and visible improvements in safety measures, Pakistan Railways faces the potential risk of losing public trust. This erosion in confidence could have detrimental effects on its operational and expansion objectives, thereby further complicating the ongoing challenges faced by the railway system.
