Delhi Police Mandate Prior Approval for Jantar Mantar Protests

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi Police has announced that prior approval from the appropriate authority is essential for organising any meetings, demonstrations, sit-ins, or protests at Jantar Mantar. This regulation aligns with a Supreme Court ruling in the case of Writ Petition (Civil), Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan vs. Union of India & Others, as well as with a Delhi Police Standing Order that was issued in compliance with the order.

It has been specified that applications for such permissions must be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in New Delhi at least ten days prior to the planned event. Compliance with this directive is mandatory for all involved parties.

Additionally, the use of Central Vista for protests is prohibited, encompassing areas like India Gate, C-Hexagon, Man Singh Road, Janpath, Rajpath, and adjacent lawns. This restriction is part of the Delhi Police Standing Order of 2022.

Designated Venues Based on Participant Numbers

The Delhi Police has outlined designated venues based on the anticipated number of participants. Protests with up to one thousand participants can take place at Jantar Mantar, those with one thousand to fifty thousand participants are directed to Ramlila Maidan, while gatherings exceeding fifty thousand participants must be held at Burari.

The police emphasised that all relevant individuals must adhere to these guidelines. Non-compliance may result in legal repercussions as stipulated by law.

This comprehensive approach aims to maintain public order and ensure the safety of all participants during such events. Authorities are adamant about enforcing these rules uniformly across all gatherings that request approval for assembly.

Political Responses and Opposition Actions

Kharge shared a message on X, emphasising that intimidation tactics will not deter their resolve. He conveyed a sense of determination among opposition members to continue their efforts despite facing legal challenges.

His remarks came after the Delhi Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) concerning Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other INDIA bloc members, for allegedly entering Akashvani Bhavan without permission during protests against the Election Commission.

In light of these developments, substantial security measures have been implemented around Jantar Mantar as the INDIA bloc MPs advance towards the site for their protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. This follows an earlier meeting convened by Kharge to address issues surrounding the Election Commission.

With a series of rallies and protests in the recent past, opposition leaders have escalated their campaign, aiming to voice their concerns more prominently at Jantar Mantar, underscoring the ongoing political tensions in the capital.
