Delhi Police Files Three FIRs Against Rahul And Priyanka Gandhi Over Protest Incident

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Police have initiated legal proceedings by filing three FIRs linked to the protests held by the Opposition on October 4, 2026. The FIRs address various allegations including purported assaults on police personnel, obstruction of government duties, and inappropriate behaviour towards law enforcement officers. High-profile Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are named in these filings, which outline the events that transpired during the demonstration.

The protests were aimed at denouncing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar due to alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The situation escalated when the police prevented members of the INDIA bloc from proceeding towards Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site.

As per reports, the registered complaints suggest a systematic breakdown of law and order during the demonstrations, with further investigations likely to follow regarding the conduct of both the protesters and the law enforcement agencies involved.

Altercation During the Protest

During the protests, Rahul Gandhi was reportedly detained by the police at the Barakhamba Road Police Station after he attempted to breach a barricade set up by law enforcement. Images from the incident depicted him expressing defiance by waving at the media and displaying a victory gesture while being taken into custody. This highlighted the tensions between the police and the opposition leaders during the demonstration.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was detained at the Chhatrasal Stadium Police Station and was seen lying on the ground as police action unfolded. Following her release, she voiced her frustrations about the alleged use of force against the protesting MPs, questioning the integrity of constitutional rights in their context.

In statements made to the press, Priyanka Gandhi strongly emphasised the significance of the Constitution and declared the willingness of opposition members to sacrifice for its preservation. She was seen holding a copy of the Constitution as a symbol of their commitment to democratic principles.

Opposition’s Response to Police Action

In response to the police action, Rahul Gandhi reiterated the commitment of the Congress and INDIA bloc to continue their protests as necessary until appropriate actions were taken against election irregularities. He conveyed through social media platforms that their movement is not a fleeting one but a sustained effort aimed at safeguarding the Constitution and democracy.

His comments included a call for the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, underscoring the determination of the opposition to maintain pressure on the ruling government. “We remain resolute in our stance and will not cease our protests until Gyanesh Kumar steps down,” he declared, emphasising that efforts to quash dissent would not deter their resolve.

The protests and subsequent detentions have raised significant concerns about the state of civil liberties in India, with the INDIA bloc asserting that they will persist with their demonstrations. With tensions remaining high, further developments in this ongoing situation are anticipated as legal proceedings unfold against the leaders involved.
