The Delhi Government has escalated its efforts to combat adulterated food products as the festive season approaches. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Food Safety Department has ramped up inspections and enforcement activities targeting milk-based items, such as khoya, paneer, chhena, and ghee. The government’s aim is to ensure that citizens have access to safe and high-quality food during this important time of year.

In the past month, the Food Safety Department has launched continuous enforcement drives across various markets and food outlets in Delhi. Key locations for these inspections included Okhla Sabzi Mandi, Mori Gate Khoya Mandi, and Sanjay Market, among others. Officials have also extended their inspection activities to online platforms, thereby increasing the scope of their oversight.

During these inspections, food business operators were reminded to adhere strictly to hygiene standards and to ensure that they sell only authentic products that meet safety criteria. Following these guidelines is crucial, particularly given the health risks associated with adulterated food items.

Enforcement Actions and Product Destruction

Throughout the inspection process, more than 4,100 kg of khoya and paneer were identified as potentially adulterated. These products were subsequently destroyed to prevent any health risks to the public. Specifically, during an inspection at Mori Gate Khoya Mandi, 30 samples of khoya were tested, and 22 were found to be unsafe for consumption.

Similar testing of 19 samples of paneer and chhena revealed that only seven conformed to the required standards while 12 did not meet the safety regulations. As a result of these findings, prosecution proceedings have been initiated against the food business operators involved, in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006.

In ongoing efforts, the Food Safety Department conducted additional inspections at locations including Khari Baoli, East Delhi’s Jheel area, and Janakpuri Mandi in West Delhi. This proactive approach is intended to reassure the public about food safety during the festive season.

Continued Focus on Food Safety During Festivities

The Delhi Government has committed to maintaining a heightened level of scrutiny regarding the safety and quality of food products throughout the festive season. Officials have announced that their inspections and the collection of surveillance samples will intensify, and legal actions will remain a priority against any found to be selling unsafe items.

Food business operators have been urged to follow all necessary food safety and hygiene standards, as any violations will lead to consequences under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reiterated that festivals are a time for joy, during which consumers purchase a significant amount of sweets and milk products.

Gupta has emphasised that any activities undermining public health through adulteration will face harsh penalties. The emphasis on safety during the festive season reflects the government’s commitment to uphold food quality standards in Delhi, ensuring citizens can celebrate without concern for food safety risks.
