The CSR Journal Magazine

Early Career Highlights

Kumar Kushagra’s journey in cricket began at a remarkably young age, showcasing his talent early on. At just 17, he achieved a double century for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy and was selected for the under-19 World Cup while still a teenager. His potential was further recognised when Delhi Capitals acquired him for ₹7.2 crore at the IPL auction when he was only 19. This early success positioned him as a promising player in the cricketing landscape.

However, the expectations set by his auction price did not translate into immediate success in the IPL. Despite the initial hype, his opportunities in the league were limited, leading to a challenging start in his professional career. Nonetheless, at the age of 21, Kushagra is now entering a significant phase of development, focusing on patience and resilience.

Recent Achievements and Domestic Performance

Kushagra’s recent selection for the India A squad for the tour of New Zealand highlights his ongoing development. He replaces the injured Rishabh Pant, marking a crucial step in his career. His domestic performances have been noteworthy, particularly during the recent A tour against Australia in Puducherry, where he scored 113, 46 not out, 10, and 1. His consistency was evident in the Duleep Trophy, where he recorded scores of 55, 0, 22, 101, and 46.

In addition to his performances in the Duleep Trophy, Kushagra showcased his skills in the Jharkhand T20 Premier League with scores of 78 off 39 balls and 58 off 26 balls. His contributions in List A matches included scores of 36 against Sri Lanka and 58 against Afghanistan. These performances indicate his ability to adapt and find ways to score across various formats.

His breakthrough moment came during the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy season when he scored 266 against Nagaland. This innings helped him gain recognition within the domestic circuit, leading to his acquisition by Delhi Capitals during the 2024 auction, where he was pursued by three franchises. However, his debut IPL season was disappointing, yielding only three runs in three innings, prompting his release from Delhi and subsequent signing by Gujarat Titans.

Focus on Red-Ball Cricket and Future Prospects

Despite the setbacks in the IPL, Kushagra’s commitment to improving his game has been commendable. His coach, Ratan Kumar, emphasised the importance of red-ball cricket in his development. Initially recognised for his talent, Kushagra faced the challenge of turning potential into consistent performance. Kumar noted that Kushagra’s intelligence and work ethic contributed significantly to his progress, particularly in adapting to the demands of red-ball cricket.

To enhance his skills, Kushagra shifted from the middle order to the No 3 position, a demanding role for a wicketkeeper. This change required him to develop greater concentration and stamina, allowing him to stay at the crease longer and convert his talent into substantial scores. Their training included playing extra balls and practising in challenging conditions to prepare for various match situations.

As a result of this focused approach, Kushagra’s performance in the 2025-26 Ranji season was impressive, amassing 572 runs, including a century against Uttar Pradesh. His contributions in the Duleep Trophy final further demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure, scoring 101 runs in a significant partnership. His white-ball statistics were equally noteworthy, with 368 runs in seven matches during the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy and 422 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Support from his family has played a crucial role in Kushagra’s development. His father, initially sceptical about cricket, became an active participant in his training, studying batting mechanics and helping him refine his technique. This collaborative effort has fostered a strong foundation for Kushagra’s career, shaping his understanding of different formats and their respective demands.
