Bitcoin Price Declines Following Surge in US Wholesale Inflation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bitcoin has seen a decline of over 3.6 per cent on Thursday, primarily influenced by recent data indicating a sharp increase in wholesale prices in the United States for September. Following the release of this inflation data, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $81,500. The cryptocurrency also dipped below its 50-day moving average, a key indicator that traders often use to gauge price trends.

According to reports, Bitcoin reached a 24-hour low of $80,443. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) announced on October 15 that the Producer Price Index (PPI), which tracks changes in prices received by producers for their goods and services, surged by 1.3 per cent in September compared to August. This increase was significantly higher than the revised 0.5 per cent rise recorded in the preceding month.

On a year-on-year basis, wholesale prices in the US rose by 6.3 per cent in September, marking the fastest increase since December 2022. The latest figures have intensified concerns regarding rising prices within the US economy, especially as they were released shortly after consumer inflation data. These two reports have provided investors with new insights into inflation trends ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting scheduled for October.

Bitcoin Fails to Surpass Key Resistance Level

Prior to the recent downturn, Bitcoin had approached the $83,900 mark during Asian trading on October 14, but subsequently fell towards $83,500. The cryptocurrency was unable to breach the significant resistance level of $84,000, which analysts had identified as a crucial barrier. Analyst Ali Martinez highlighted this level on Bitcoin’s four-hour price chart, suggesting that a closure above $84,000 could lead to a potential rise towards $93,000. However, this target remained conditional and not a definitive prediction.

For Bitcoin to reach the $93,000 target, it would need to break above the $84,000 resistance level and sustain an upward trajectory. Additionally, comments from New York Federal Reserve President John Williams on October 13 indicated that another rate increase could be appropriate before the end of 2026, although he noted that current economic conditions did not necessitate further increases in 2027.

Energy prices have been identified as the primary factor contributing to the rise in wholesale inflation. The BLS reported a 10.8 per cent increase in energy prices, which accounted for over 80 per cent of the overall rise in prices for final-demand goods. Gasoline prices alone surged by 20.3 per cent in September.

Market Reactions and Future Expectations

The recent inflation data has led to mixed reactions in the market, particularly regarding the Federal Reserve’s potential interest rate decisions. Following the consumer inflation report, market expectations were divided, with the CME FedWatch tool indicating a 34 per cent probability of a quarter-percentage-point rate increase in October and a 66 per cent chance of rates remaining unchanged.

In a separate report, annual consumer inflation was noted to have reached 3.7 per cent, while core inflation stood at 2.6 per cent, exceeding the 2.5 per cent forecast. Chief economist Martin Beck expressed concerns about persistent inflation but acknowledged that weaker employment data and fragile consumer sentiment might lead the Federal Reserve to maintain current interest rates.

Investment flows into US-listed Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have also slowed ahead of the inflation reports. Provisional figures indicated that these funds attracted $82.9 million between September 28 and October 2, a significant decrease compared to the $2.39 billion recorded in the previous week. As traders assess the implications of rising wholesale prices, they are closely monitoring how these economic factors may influence demand for cryptocurrencies.
