Bengaluru Hotels Association Urges Karnataka Government to Reconsider Dry Day Order Ahead of Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bangalore Hotels Association has formally requested the Karnataka government to reconsider the dry day order implemented for the upcoming biennial elections to four Legislative Council seats. The association highlighted that the decision could lead to significant financial repercussions, estimating losses of over ₹500 crore for the hospitality sector.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on October 13, the association pointed out that the dry day is set to commence at 4 pm on October 21 and will remain in effect until October 23, including October 27, the date designated for vote counting. The association expressed concern that the restrictions would severely impact bars, restaurants, and pubs, thereby affecting the overall hospitality industry and the revenue generated by the state’s Excise Department.

The association’s letter argued that the election involves only around 20,000 voters, with approximately 15,000 being women. They contended that imposing a dry day across Bengaluru city, excluding the Police Commissionerate limits, for such a limited voter base would create unnecessary challenges for liquor vendors and the hospitality sector.

Impact on the Hospitality Industry

The Bangalore Hotels Association has underscored the potential adverse effects of the dry day order on the hospitality industry. They emphasised that the restrictions not only hinder business operations but also threaten the livelihoods of many individuals employed within the sector. The association believes that the anticipated financial losses could have long-lasting implications for businesses that rely heavily on the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Furthermore, the association has urged the government to reconsider the necessity of the dry day in light of the limited scale of the election. They argue that the decision disproportionately affects a broader segment of the population, including patrons who frequent establishments in Bengaluru. The association maintains that the economic repercussions could extend beyond immediate losses, affecting future business prospects in the region.

In their communication, the association has highlighted the importance of the hospitality industry to the local economy. They have called for a balanced approach that considers both the electoral process and the economic realities faced by businesses in the city. The association’s appeal seeks to ensure that the interests of the hospitality sector are taken into account during this electoral period.

Details of the Upcoming Elections

The biennial elections for four Karnataka Legislative Council seats are scheduled for October 23, with voting taking place from 8 am to 4 pm. The constituencies involved in these elections include Karnataka South-East Graduates’, Karnataka West Graduates’, Karnataka North-East Teachers’, and Bangalore Teachers’. The elections are expected to attract attention due to their significance in the state’s political landscape.

As the election date approaches, the Bangalore Hotels Association continues to advocate for the withdrawal of the dry day order, emphasising the need for a collaborative approach between the government and the hospitality sector. The association believes that addressing this issue will not only benefit local businesses but also contribute to a more vibrant electoral atmosphere.

In conclusion, the Bangalore Hotels Association remains hopeful that the Karnataka government will reconsider the dry day order, taking into account the potential economic impact on the hospitality industry. The association’s request reflects broader concerns about the balance between regulatory measures and the economic vitality of Bengaluru’s hospitality sector.
